Spare room chic: How to transform the forgotten room into a space you won’t want to leave

We take a look at some of the ways in which you can create a haven at home, in the often forgotten spare room.

There are the obvious rooms within a home that garner the most attention when it comes to revamping your interiors, namely the kitchen, lounge, bathroom and bedroom. But when you’re satisfied that these rooms have reached your lofty design standards, it’s time to turn your attention to the spare room.

Often kept free as a guest bedroom, the spare room can encompass a range of uses with a few purchases. Whether you buy a beautiful wood desk that can be used as a workspace or dressing table, shop charcoal sofa beds to be used in a smart library setting or even in a cinema room, or install a top-of-the-range sound system that can be utilises for a range of purposes, it’s safe to say that there is in fact a lot that can be done here to elevate the space.

If you’re looking to give the humble spare room the love and care that it deserves, then read on as we take a look at some of the ways in which you can create a haven at home, and a space so inviting that you’ll rarely want to leave it.

Cinema room

The imagination of a film lover will likely head straight to the prospect of creating a cinema room in this additional space, and why not? The great thing about having a room dedicated to screening films and streaming the latest TV shows in absolute comfort is that it frees up your living room from sofa dwellers resulting in a more sociable space dedicated to meaningful conversations.

Cinema rooms need to be kept dark, so when planning out this space, buy paint that boasts deeper, richer tones, use low lighting, and opt for blackout curtains in a deep colour to create that cosy cinema atmosphere. Add a shelf that holds sweets and other snacks as well as a popcorn machine and make sure you have top quality equipment for the full viewing experience.

Gym

Are you dedicated to your fitness? Perhaps the thought of hauling yourself to the gym on cold dark evenings is too much to bear at times, well with a gym in your own home, there’s no excuse not to get that workout in. The main benefit of installing some gym equipment at home is that you can train at any time of the day that suits you, you’ll never have to compete for space with strangers and you can play your music as loudly as you like or choose from a range of tutorials or classes to be undertaken at your leisure. Deck out the space with some gym mats for soundproofing, a wall-mounted TV, good sound system, and your preferred gym equipment for the ultimate home gym.

Games room or playroom

Anyone who has children will know that they generally come with a lot of toys and games, and if you’re concerned that your carefully chosen décor and tidy space will be ruined, then dedicating a playroom for them can work wonders.

The great thing about this space is that it can evolve with your child or children; when they are young, a playroom dedicated to their toys and a safe space for them to play in works well for the both of you, while a more mature games room will be needed later on in life. Play mats and plenty of safety features will be key as will washable paint for the walls when they are young, and the décor can be updated as they age.

Library/office

Working from home has become pretty normal for many professions over the past year or so, and one way of adapting this is to incorporate a relaxing library space with a working area for those days when you need to concentrate and be efficient.

You can have some fun here, it doesn’t have to be a formal space, unless you want it to be, of course. Bookworms will love the idea of a space dedicated to whiling the hours away in comfort with a good book, so make sure the seating is as comfortable as can be with a reading light close by. For the office part, ensure there’s a comfortable chair and desk, storage, and any equipment needed to be as efficient as possible.

Of course, you can also use this room as a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room, create a sumptuous and welcoming guest bedroom, or perhaps even dedicate this space to your wellness with a massage table, yoga mat and blocks, and relaxing tunes and scents ready to go when you need that hit of relaxation.
