Iconic Alexander McQueen suit returns home to Savile Row

By Jake Daniels   |

A bespoke suit built for the late Lee Alexander McQueen by renowned London tailor Huntsman has returned to its original home on Savile Row.

In 2002, the late Alexander McQueen presented his first menswear collection in collaboration with Huntsman. This collection, dubbed ‘McQueen at Huntsman’ spoke of 12 luxury pieces designed to form a complete wardrobe. The construction and architecture of each employed the core techniques McQueen learnt in his four-year apprenticeship on the Row. It was during this time that Huntsman worked alongside McQueen to deliver a bespoke suit for his own personal use.

After having recently had the opportunity to bid on the suit at auction, Pierre Lagrange, co-owner of Huntsman, won the right to bring the distinguished suit back home. Now the public have the opportunity to view it via a window display at 11 Savile Row.

A delighted Pierre said: “In celebration of a magnificent individual and a true craftsman, we are honored and privileged to have been given the opportunity to purchase Lee Alexander McQueen’s personal Huntsman suit.

“The suit was purchased after a fierce battle, at a record price of £3,700 for a vintage Savile Row suit. It will feature prominently in the Huntsman archives, in remembrance of the unique relationship Huntsman and McQueen held. We welcome admirers of the brand to visit and remember his many years of brilliance.”

This is most expensive pre-owned suit ever bought at auction from Savile Row, Hunstman told me. The lot also included an authentic reproduction of the invitation to Alexander McQueen’s memorial service and his personal jumper by his own brand.

The late Alexander McQueen is perhaps the most famous British fashion designer of all time. His collections are currently showcasing at the V&A and the possibility exists that his face could be on the new £20 note in the year 2020.
