Situated in the NoMad district of Manhattan, The Evelyn is a convenient base for you to explore the multitude of sightseeing, shopping and dining options on offer in this thriving metropolis.

The area was known historically as Tin Pan Alley, the nucleus of American music history. Back in the heyday, the area was awash with Broadway creatives and you can still sense the musicality of the district from the numerous jazz bars in the vicinity. Flatiron Building, Empire State Building, and Madison Square Garden are all a short stroll away.

The hotel is also set in New York City’s burgeoning Silicon Alley, so don’t be surprised to see business meetings in the lobby along with tourists.

Hotel

The lobby has a sumptous feel with plush sofas and a stunning stained glass window

Built in a glorious Beaux-Arts style, this historic hotel has been around in various guises since 1905. It became the Evelyn hotel in 2017 and was given an Art Deco makeover in 2018 that is the perfect nod to the building’s colourful, creative past. The lobby evokes a sense of the gilded age. You’ll notice plenty of balanced geometric shapes, an abundance of gold piping and sleek, velvety blue couches.

The stained glass wall in the reception area helps to add a spacious feel to the lobby and the adjacent Evelyn Bar helps to create a buzzing vibe on the ground floor. You can’t help but feel that this vibrant, boutique hotel is the place to be for fashionistas and creative types. The hotel is also pet-friendly if you have a dog that is under 40Ibs.

Room

Stylish rooms and suites combine vintage touches with modern amenities

Vintage vibes and musical touches extend to their rooms and suites. Plenty of gold colour has been used to support the lighting. The wardrobes and cupboards exude an antique vibe. The plush queen bed is fitted with smooth Frette linens to guarantee a restful night’s sleep. I always appreciate a hotel that can supply a USB port and multimedia hub, which is essential these days.

All the rooms come with en-suite porcelain bathrooms. Despite the lack of space, you still get a rainfall shower and the tiles are decorated with musical notes that allude to the history of the hotel. Hairdryer, plush robes, safe and high-speed internet are all present and in good working order.

Food and drink

Hotel guests can enjoy an authentic NYC breakfast at the Brooklyn Diner Pop-Up deli

As with most boutique hotels in New York, they don’t have an in-house restaurant but as mentioned above, they do have a very hip and happening bar serving some of the finest cocktails in town. Breakfast was included and served at the Brooklyn Diner Pop-Up, which is their delicatessen serving Brooklyn classics from 7am – 11am daily.

We were enticed by their scrambled eggs and cheese bagel. Alternatively, you can enjoy a fruit bowl along with your essential cup of coffee or tea to start the day. If you are looking for something more substantial, there is an embarrassment of riches nearby in terms of restaurants or even if you want something more casual from a local supermarket.

To do

The hotel is close to iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building

Where do we start? If you are looking for iconic landmarks, there is the Flatiron Building and Empire State Building nearby. The latter has had its museum refurbished recently so you can experience classic scenes like King Kong at the Empire State Building. You are only a short walk away from Chelsea market where you have a plethora of upscale food stalls or if you are after the latest on-trend shops, then head to Hudson Yards. There you will also see the remarkable architectural structure, The Vessel.

You are also never far away from the subway, so it’s easy to head south and visit the financial district, where you can see the famous charging bull of Wall Street, the respectfully constructed National September 11 Memorial and Museum and the architectural marvel that is The Oculus.

The hotel is part of the Triumph group and they offer daily walking tours from their differing hotels for you to explore the distinct areas of Manhattan. The hotel also has a 24-hr fitness centre.

In a nutshell

With a central location in Manhattan, The Evelyn is the ideal launchpad for you to discover New York City. The charming Art Deco style of the hotel will make you feel like you’ve walked onto the set of The Gilded Age.
