The Langham is a name synonymous with elegance and grandeur, much loved by the British public. With The Langham, New York, Fifth Avenue, they’ve delivered British refinement along with New York modernity. Service is discreet and personable – don’t be surprised if the staff remember your name after your first meeting.
This modern skyscraper was built as The Setai back in 2010 with the Langham taking over in 2013 and they’ve since had a significant renovation in 2017. There are very clean, white aesthetics as you enter the hotel which is punctuated by splashes of colour from the numerous Alex Katz masterpieces adorning the walls, the owner of the Langham evidently adores artwork from Alex Katz.
Hotel
There is a very impressive, minimalistic staircase with a waterdrop art installation leading to Michelin-starred Italian restaurant, Ai Fiori, and the hotel has also recently launched, The Langham Club. This club concept offers exclusivity for their VIP guests who would like some extra privacy whilst enjoying their breakfast or evening cocktails and canapés before heading out to enjoy the New York nightlife. There’s free-flowing Champagne throughout the day from 7.30am to 8.30pm.
The staff at the hotel go above and beyond to ensure a faultless stay. Be it offering you cartoned water every time you return to the hotel to leaving soothing jazz music playing during turndown along with luxury chocolates to discover upon your return at the the of the day.
Room
You will be shocked at the size of the hotel rooms, with entry-level superior rooms boasting 395sqm to their presidential suite which offers a whopping 1,775sqm. Anyone who’s visited New York before will know this is extremely generous compared to similar hotels in the city. They make great use of their height with windows abound providing plenty of natural daylight along with unrivalled views of Manhattan.
Gorgeous marble bathrooms with double vanities, spacious rainfall showers and relaxing deep soaking tubs should be expected, while there’s even a television built into the bathroom mirror. Their bathroom amenities are supplied by world-renown, Chuan Spa. Expect copious amounts of space in the walk-in wardrobe and the Swedish Duxiana bed will make you feel like you are sleeping on a pillowy cloud whilst you stare into the New York skyline. The hotel is currently offering a Sleep Matters turn-down kit package which includes herbal tea, SOM – an all-natural, drug-free sleep aid and custom silk cushioned sleep mask.
Food and drink
Breakfast at The Langham Club promises the best omelettes in town, just head to the egg station and watch as your food is freshly prepared in front of you.
However, the jewel in the hotel’s crown is undoubtedly Michelin-starred, Ai Fiori. It’s all about cooking great, traditional Italian recipes but using the finest ingredients from the north Atlantic and pasta is, unsurprisingly, their speciality.
You will sample expertly prepared delights such as the handmade caramelle filled with ricotta di bufala (candy-shaped pasta) and the umami-rich blue crab spaghetti with bottarga. If you see the jumbo-sized scallops they serve for their entrée, you’ll know they don’t skimp on their ingredients. The price of the dishes might be above-average, but the Michelin quality of the food is undeniable.
There are stunning floral decorations throughout the dining space, which isn’t a surprise considering their name translates to ‘among the flowers’. You shouldn’t be surprised to find numerous diners at 4.30pm, service is ultra-prompt, allowing you time in the evening to catch a show on Broadway, especially as many shows start at 8pm.
To do
With state-of-the-art Technogym equipment and weights plus virtual fitness classes available to guests, you can stay fit and healthy on your travels.
The hotel is only a few blocks away from the bright lights of Broadway where you can catch the latest musicals and shows and with 15 new shows having opened on Broadway in April, rest assured that there’s something for all tastes. I would recommend checking out the hottest ticket in town, The Music Man and also the revival of Funny Girl, which gave Barbra Streisand her star-making turn back in the 1960s.
In a nutshell
The Langham delivers again with a hotel that bristles with New York energy and British sophistication. Its midtown location in Manhattan means it’s an ideal base for you to discover the Big Apple whether you want to go luxury shopping on Fifth Avenue or catch the latest shows on Broadway.
