Over the past few years, we’ve undoubtedly seen the meteoric rise in the popularity of OLED TVs. From Samsung, Sony and LG, OLED and QLED TVs have become significantly more available and an attractive option. But before you start frantically searching for what’s the best 43-inch TV, where to find the best speakers, and where to find the best deals, let’s talk about this year’s up-and-coming cutting-edge TVs that are bound to blow you away.
OLED TVs
Despite being commercially available for over ten years, OLED TVs still are an astounding, worthwhile addition to a home cinema.
We’ve recently seen the prices of OLED TVs fall considerably with the release of new tech. Even in some great new releases such as LG’S OLED48C24LA, a brand-new TV with a stunning screen, 4K AI processing for picture upscaling in real-time, and unbeatable refresh rates for gaming enthusiasts looking to upgrade.
QD-OLED TVs
This may very well be the year of the QD-OLED TV for many, as Sony, Samsung and LG are taking pre-orders for these absolutely mesmerising TVs.
But what is QD-OLED you may wonder?
QD-OLED is a combination of both Quantum Dot and Organic Light-emitting Diode. OLED tech was initially such a massive evolution in TVs because they are self-illuminating, thus eliminating the need for a backlight, meaning that refresh rates are considerably quicker, and the TVs are overall much more efficient.
The benefit of QLED, however, is from the use of phosphorescent nanocrystals which can produce over one billion shades of colour, far greater than standard OLED, so you get the benefits of OLED’s fantastic speed, as well as QLED’s incredible colour range.
Mini-LED
One of our newer screen technologies to hit the market with a bang this year, Mini-LED TVs are quite capable of rivalling both OLED and QLED TVs without question.
While Quantum dot diodes are absolutely tiny, Mini-LEDs are even smaller. In fact, they’re almost as small as a single pixel themselves, and smaller diodes means a massive improvement in picture quality. Unlike OLED, however, Mini-LED TVs still use a backlight, and so, despite having incredible refresh rates, are outmatched by the OLED considerably.
As of now, these TVs will set you back at least £3,000, so if money is no object, this may very well be the next TV for you.
And if you thought that was impressive, read on, we’ve saved the best till last.
Micro-LEDs
We’ve stressed just how tiny Mini-LEDs really are and how incredible that is for the future of the 4K TV, yet it truly pales in comparison to the Micro-LED TV.
Micro-LED TVs, if you can believe it, use even smaller LEDs, about 1/100th the size of a conventional LED (a Mini-LED is about 1/40th), that’s about 0.0508 mm.
And of course, this is exciting! It’s even sharper than the Mini-LED, but is that it?
Not quite, in fact the micro-LED is also, much like the OLED TV, completely self-illuminating. This means there’s no backlight required, so we can experience the absolute best picture quality, the best colour range, and the best refresh rates on the market.
OLED’s major setback for many years has been its brightness, with peak brightness levels reaching about 600-1000 nits (compared to mini-LEDs that can reach 2,000 nits or more). Micro-LEDs, however, have reached brightness levels of up to 5,000 nits, which is frankly brilliant.
Samsung recently unveiled their 2022 MICRO LED screen at CES 2022, releasing it in the following impressive sizes; 110”, 101” and 89”.
Of course, these TVs aren’t for the faint of heart or the spatially constrained customer, but nevertheless, we are very excited for the future of the 4K TV.
