Restaurant review: The Ivy Brasserie, Kensington High Street in London

By Ben Lake   |

Wandering down Kensington High Street on a personal shopping mission for one of my clients, I found myself drawn to the warm lighting behind the discreet drapes of the new Ivy Brasserie, Kensington. I have been meaning to visit the restaurant since it opened just over a month ago on the 15 December, and I thought to myself now, on this crisp January afternoon, is the perfect opportunity.

The entrance evoked fond memories of its predecessor as I was welcomed by the delicate hostess and escorted to the bar. Walking through the restaurant, I had that warm and nostalgic feel that I always associate with The Ivy Restaurant Group. I was excited to take a seat at the bar and absorb the atmosphere and décor. Presented with the drinks menu by the barman, I decided to test him on his mocktail skills. I selected the Peach and Elderflower Iced Tea. He promptly went to work and it was clear that Head Barman Sean Jackson had trained his team to perfection. One sip and I was hooked on this sweet, exquisitely prepared booster.

Sitting at the bar as a single patron, I felt relaxed and comfortable while my eyes, ears and nose flirted with the delicious sensations on offer. It was late afternoon and I could see the restaurant starting to fill up with its early evening diners and, by 5:45pm, there was no longer room at the sexy peuter bar top.

I could not warrant a meal after a late lunch elsewhere but I was certainly not leaving without trying a signature desert. With great difficulty I resisted the highlighted Chocolate Bombe and went for the much more moderate Frozen Berries – Mixed berries with yoghurt sorbet and warm white chocolate sauce. The dish was quickly put together and in true ‘The Ivy’ style, was creatively presented. The barman poured the warm white chocolate sauce over the top of the frozen yoghurt and berries and it quickly solidified, coating my berries in the cream coloured sauce. Every bite was a delight and, accompanied by my perfectly brewed macchiato, I found myself in pudding heaven.

At £4.50 for the mocktail, £7.50 for dessert, and £3.25 for coffee my impromptu visit cost £15.25. A typical three-course dinner will set you back in the region of £35-£55 per person and the wine list starts at around £19.50 per bottle. Afternoon tea starts at £19.75 per person.

Reasonable prices, friendly staff and great food and drink – Restaurant Manager, Richard Moore, you can hold your head up high – Kensington has a new “boss” restaurant in town!
