We asked the experts at leather bag designers Von Baer to share five simple care and maintenance tips that promise to help you do just that, ensuring that your most prized accessory will stand the test of time, just as it is meant to.
Cleanliness is next to godliness
It’s true what they say; cleanliness really is next to godliness when it comes to your luxury leather handbag, and allowing dirt and debris to accumulate on it can quickly dim its glow. To make sure it continues to shine bright, give it a gentle wipedown with a soft, dry cloth once a week. If it requires a deeper clean, then use a cleaning product designed specifically for the type of leather your bag is made from and follow the instructions carefully – this will usually mean using a soft cloth to remove dirt and grime before allowing it to air dry. Avoid using excessive water or soaking the leather, as this can damage the material.
Mint condition
Luxury leather requires a little more TLC than simply keeping it dirt free, and the key to it looking fabulous for as long as possible is keeping it soft, supple and moisturised. To do so, invest in a good quality leather conditioner and apply it to your handbag with a soft cloth, using gentle circular motions. Pay particular attention to the corners and edges, which can be particularly prone to wear and tear and as a result, can dry out more quickly than the main body of your bag. To do so, you can apply a waterproof or water-resistant spray that will act as a protective coating and prevent any moisture from seeping into the leather. If your bag does come into contact with water once applied then you can rest safe in the knowledge that you can simply wipe it down with a cloth to dry it – no need to worry about any unsightly watermarks. Avoid directing a hand or hairdryer at it or placing it near a radiator, as this can result in cracking as it dries out.
Safe storage
To ensure your bag maintains its shape, proper storage is key – so don’t be tempted to simply sling it on a coat hook or leave it on the hallway floor. Instead, put it away safely when not in use, ensuring that it is clean and dry before doing so, and stuff it with tissue paper to prevent sagging and creasing. Ensure you opt for a colourless paper to avoid any staining of your beloved leather bag’s interior, and store it inside your wardrobe or a clean cupboard, away from direct sunlight to protect it from fading or discolouration.
Handle with Care
