Jaipur has managed to preserve its heartbeat with remarkable finesse. It’s a labyrinth of captivating bazaars, resplendent palaces, and streets bursting with colours, where camels and motorbikes engage in a delightful dance for space. The air is filled with the aroma of exotic spices, while the rhythmic clatter of hooves and the revving of engines create a symphony of urban life.

Maharaja Jai Singh, the visionary ruler, left no stone unturned in building a city that stands as a testament of his ingenuity. Majestic palaces rise like phoenixes from the ground, each one a testament to the grandeur of the Rajputana dynasty. Like poetry etched in pink stone, the city effortlessly resurrects the allure and enigma of the bygone era of Rajputana.

During my recent sojourn in Jaipur, I had the distinct pleasure of being a part of the jubilant festivities commemorating Jaipur Watch Company’s decade of existence, coinciding with the momentous 175th birth anniversary of the illustrious Raja Ravi Varma.

As the event unfolded at the Taj Jai Mahal Palace, I spent three glorious days at this magnificent 18th-century palace, sprawling across a vast 18-acre estate nestled in the heart of Jaipur. Embellished with a symphony of colours and scents, the Taj Jai Mahal Palace built in 1745 beckons you with an air of regal allure, where time itself seems to halt, and every nook and cranny murmurs tales of glamour.

As you traverse the extensive corridors, your gaze is met by exquisite portraits of Maharani Gayatri Devi and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the epitome of modern royalty in their era. Today, their grandchildren proudly oversee and operate this opulent ancestral abode, transformed into a resplendent heritage hotel.

Exquisite carvings, intricate frescoes, and opulent chandeliers grace every corner, proudly displaying the masterful artistry of a long-forgotten era. Every room is a work of art, effortlessly harmonising with the opulent history of the palace, particularly the lobby adorned with two majestic throne chairs.

This luxury hotel is steeped in history

The illustrious Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur proudly boasts a rich history spanning 260 years of Indo-Saracenic architectural magnificence. This architectural marvel was brought to life by Sawai Ishwari Singh’s esteemed Military Commander and Prime Minister, Hargovind Natani.

Once the cherished abode of the Prime Minister of the princely state of Jaipur, this palace has now transformed into a luxurious hotel, offering a total of 96 rooms, including six opulent suites. The pièce de résistance is the Jai Mahal garden, adorned with a cascading waterway that gracefully meanders past stone pavilions, culminating in enchanting fountain pools.

Picture-perfect, isn’t it? Now, let’s take a stroll through the stately Mughal Gardens, where the melodious calls of peacocks serenade your senses. This formal, multi-level paradise is divided into quarters, adorned with pavilions, meandering water channels, vibrant flowerbeds, serene ponds, and elegant stone pathways. It’s like stepping into a dream!

The heart of this magnificent palace lies in the Natani-ka-Bagh at Jaipur. This very spot was once the garden house of the illustrious 18th-century Rajput chieftain, Hargovind Natani. Little did he know that his humble abode would transform into a monument of fame 124 years later. The ambience, well! We’re talking about individuals who crave the royal treatment – envision youthful lovebirds on their honeymoon and seasoned couples returning for another delightful escapade.

The hotel boasts a wide selection of luxurious rooms and suites

Retire to your luxurious room or suite, where every detail has been meticulously curated to ensure your utmost comfort. Sink into the plush bedding, rung by opulent furnishings and breath-taking views of the palace gardens. Let the comfort lull you into a peaceful slumber, as you dream of the wonders that await you the next day.

Even the deluxe rooms, their entry-level accommodation, exude sheer luxury. The opulence they offer, boasts a four-poster bed, marble floors, and intricate wooden latticework. Ceilings are adorned with delicate pastel blue and white floral stencils. Each room is equipped with all the modern amenities you could desire.

If you’re seeking a truly picturesque experience, opt for rooms that are tucked away from the bustling main lobby. These hidden gems offer breath-taking views of lush pools and grounds. I highly recommend the garden views for a truly escapist experience. In the bathroom, you’ll find a separate rain shower, a bathtub for those indulgent soaks, and of course, a trusty hair dryer to tame those locks.

Food and drink

Dining options include Marble Arch, with its stunning interior

At the palace’s exquisite restaurants, culinary delights from around the world are expertly prepared to tantalise your taste buds. Whether you crave traditional Rajasthani delicacies or international flavours, the talented chefs at Taj Jai Mahal Palace will leave you craving more.

There is not one, not two, but a whopping four restaurants, a bar, and even a bakery. But Cinnamon, what used to be the prime minister’s dining room, truly steals the show. This gem of a restaurant serves up dishes that were once reserved for the high and mighty aristocracy of the ‘princely states’ like Rajputana, Awadh, Hyderabad, and Kashmir.

Cinnamon is an experience fit for royalty. Brace yourself for the fiery Laal Maas, a lamb dish that packs a punch with its generous helping of chillies. If you’re a fan of slow-cooked goodness, then the house speciality, Dal Cinnamon, will be your new obsession. Black lentils are simmered overnight, resulting in a velvety, melt-in-your-mouth delight that will have you coming back for seconds, thirds, and maybe even fourths.

As the sun sets, immerse yourself in a delightful dinner at the charming patio, where a folk dance performance awaits. The Marigold Bar boasts an impressive array of meticulously crafted cocktails. Don’t miss the opportunity to sip on the Jaipur martini, a true gem among their libations.

Polo match

The sprawling gardens of the hotel can easily double as a polo ground

The sprawling gardens of Taj Jai Mahal Palace are so vast, that they could easily double as a polo ground – a sport once cherished by the regals who graced these very lands. During my stay at Taj Jai Mahal Palace, I had the pleasure of catching a rousing polo match organised by Gaurav Mehta, the founder and CEO of Jaipur Watch Company.

The sun shone down on the perfectly manicured lawns, the thundering hooves of majestic horses, and the clinking of champagne glasses as the crowd eagerly awaited the match to begin. As the match commenced, the air crackled with excitement. The players, skilled and determined, showcased their prowess on the field, manoeuvring their horses with grace and precision. Among the distinguished guests at this prestigious event was none other than Prince Rama Varma, a renowned Indian classical musician and a member of the Royal Family of Travancore.

The estate has a lovely running track around it. I couldn’t help but enjoy a leisurely jog every day, surrounded by beauty, given it was only two minutes from my garden-facing accommodation. Join morning yoga classes beside the outdoor pool, as you enjoy the warm sun and the soothing sound of water lapping, or relax in a comfy hammock and watch the hornbills’ beautiful dance as they dart from tree to tree. Watch as flocks of rock pigeons perform airborne feats of strength and peacocks stroll around like they are the rulers of this paradise.

The state-of-the-art fitness centre at Taj Jai Mahal Palace has all you need to keep up your active lifestyle, and its on-site spa is the finest spot to unwind and sink into deep relaxation.

Travelling with your little ones? Taj Jai Mahal Palace has an outdoor playground, buggy rides, and an indoor gaming area that will keep them happily occupied. And from time to time, they also bring in the big guns – magicians, puppeteers, and potters who will dazzle you with local tricks. Oh, and did I mention the carved outdoor movable chess set? It’s a blast! Challenge your friends to a strategic battle of wits while enjoying the fresh air. Who said chess couldn’t be fun?
