The Manor
Arriving at Wolterton Park is like stepping into a different century, minus the questionable hygiene standards of yore. The estate, nestled in the Norfolk countryside about 40 minutes north of Norwich, radiates a stately, almost regal ambiance.
The manor house is a stunning example of how history and modern comforts can coexist beautifully. With sweeping views of the estate’s 500 acres, this palatial home has 18 bedrooms (split between the main hall with 11 bedrooms, and the East Wing with 7).
I’m always blown away by the history of grand, old homes – the stories and details that bring the wealthy homeowners of yesterday alive. After having a tour of the hall and hearing the tales of its colourful days of old, Wolterton now holds first place in my head of ‘most extravagant flex’.
One of its early owners wasn’t thrilled with the original location of the house, so, naturally, he had the entire thing demolished and rebuilt in a different spot with better views (as you do).
But, it gets better.
After the new manor was finished, he noticed he could see the neighbouring village from the upper floors. Not caring for the sight of other houses cluttering up his horizon, he did what any reasonable manor house owner would do: he had the whole village moved (as you do).
Because of his bold decision, Wolterton now has total privacy from every room, with views of nothing but rolling fields, the estate lake, and trees gently blowing in the breeze.
The East Wing
The East Wing of Wolterton Hall is a statement in itself. The seven-bedroom wing is all about understated elegance and modern comfort, without losing the historical charm.
It’s big enough to get temporarily lost in, without being so big that you’ll never find your way out – ideal for larger groups wanting to enjoy country grandeur in privacy. You’ll lap up the historic atmosphere under vaulted ceilings, surrounded by period furniture, and, because this is 2024, you’ll also get to enjoy your own private cinema – just in case you can’t completely unplug without your Netflix.
The pièce de résistance? In my humble opinion, it would be the formal dining room. Its rich red fabric walls, ornate details and jaw-dropping artwork make it perfect for sumptuous evening gatherings, or, if you’re me, feeling like royalty for a fleeting moment before remembering you have to go back to your real life in a few days.
The bedrooms are their own little slices of heaven, lovingly restored to perfection with a thoughtful mix of period features and modern touches. Think tall windows, antique furnishings and artfully designed themes, paired with plush beds, crisps linens and en suite bathrooms that look like they belong in a luxury spa. No chamber pots here, thank you very much (although some of the rooms do have them built into the antique furniture!).
The rooms are spread across three floors, the ‘turret’ room being especially grand with views to die for. Whether you’re looking for comfy and cosy near the kitchen for a midnight snack, or four-poster luxury away from everyone else, the East Wing has a bedroom for everyone.
Food and drink
Self-catering reigns supreme here, though Wolterton offers a concierge service to arrange private chefs if cooking for yourself seems a bit strange in a setting like this.
If, like us, you love donning an apron and frying pan, the kitchen is a thing of beauty and practicality, stocked with all the essentials and a few fancy extras – think Le Creuset pans and enough glasses to host a royal banquet.

The Saracen’s Head
Just outside the gates of Wolterton Park, this charming inn, originally built in 1806 in the style of an Italian farmhouse by GS Repton for Horatio Walpole (owner of Wolterton), The Saracen’s Head offers a cosy setting perfect for a countryside escape. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and classic dishes, celebrating Norfolk’s abundance of produce (like the local Cromer Crab). The ambiance is warm and inviting, ideal for a relaxed evening after a day of exploring the estate.
The Gunton Arms
Located just a short drive from Wolterton, The Gunton Arms is a unique British pub set within a deer park. Expect hearty dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, often cooked over an open fire.
