Glycolic acid is the latest miracle product praised by experts. According to Google Trends, global interest in the product has risen by 139 per cent in the last three months.
With this in mind, Waleed Taleb, CMO of Vera Clinic, has examined glycolic acid’s benefits for healthy hair and skin.
How glycolic acid promotes healthy hair
Glycolic acid is a water-soluble hydroxy acid (AHA) which is derived from sugar cane, according to Verywell Health. In other words, it is a chemical exfoliant that can be used on the scalp to promote healthier hair.
Once applied to the scalp, glycolic acid removes dead skin cells, product build-up, and excess oils, in turn unclogging hair follicles and stimulating hair growth. Healthline also reports that glycolic acid can be used to reduce inflammation.
To use, start by massaging the acid into the scalp and leaving it on for 10 to 30 minutes. It is important to wash it out with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner afterwards.
However, everyone should conduct a skin test beforehand, always start with a lower concentration of around 5 per cent to 10 per cent, and use the solution a maximum of once or twice a week to avoid chemical burns.
The answer to wrinkles, strawberry legs, and hyperpigmentation
Glycolic acid also promotes smooth, plump skin. As a chemical exfoliant, it removes the top layer of skin without the need for multiple products or devices.
It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen and improving the elasticity of the skin. As it is milder than retinol, glycolic acid is better suited for sensitive skin when used sparingly.
Glycolic acid can also be used to treat strawberry legs and keratosis pilaris, two common, harmless skin conditions that cause small, rough bumps on legs and arms, as well as discolouration of the underarms.
To use, apply a small amount to a cotton pad and apply to the problem area. Those with sensitive skin can also use a spray bottle to distribute the product evenly, which is recommended for use on the underarms.
Glycolic acid works miracles from head to foot
Say goodbye to cracked, dry heels in 2025. The benefits of glycolic acid extend to the feet, as its exfoliating properties remove hard, dead skin from heels.
According to Instagrammer @dermatologysurgeon, glycolic acid also reduces the pH of the skin, which helps with odour.
After applying the product with a cotton pad, be sure to follow this with a thick moisturiser and wear socks to lock in the moisture.
However, Taleb warns people against using glycolic acid with other harsh ingredients, such as vitamin C, retinol and other exfoliating acids like lactic acid and salicylic acid.
