Restaurant Review: A Sparkling Sunday at Cinnamon Soho in central London

A contemporary twist on the brunch revolution, modern Indian eatery Cinnamon Soho, a cobble or two from Carnaby Street, has recently launched their Sparkling Sunday bottomless brunch. Aside the eggs Benedict and often exhausted smashed avocado on toast, the edgy Indian menu mixes up and plays on expectations with fun flavour combinations layered with bright colours and rich aromas.

After the obligatory flute of Prosecco, Sparkling Sundays at Cinnamon Soho starts with parathas – their breakfast speciality, topped with herby fried eggs. A popular favourite from the Indian subcontinent since the 12th century, these warm homemade flatbreads perfectly complement the sharing dishes across the menu and are made up with a variation of ingredients cooked to perfection with a crispy edge. The two examples that we chose included the ‘Aloo’ paratha (a mix of potato with a hint of chilli) and the creatively named ‘Bollyflower Cheese’ (cauliflower & Keen’s cheddar); both served with what they call their ‘magical marmite’…maybe not so Indian although on this occasion more so than smashed avocado.

The flavours of Cinnamon Soho really shine within their ‘Soho Plates’. A lengthy list with something for everyone – each is described as well as it tastes. Mixing up our options we select tandoori chicken malai tikka with mace and cardamom, Tanjore style grilled king prawns with spinach porial and lemon rice, with our favourite of the day – vindaloo of ox cheek with masala mash and picked radish; beautifully tender and layered within a rich sauce. We order, as a side, their house black dal which pairs beautifully with the parathas. Helpfully all three are listed on the menu as gluten free. Rounding off with sweet treats, with our topped up Proseccos remaining firmly in hand – chocolate Golis (chocolate chilli and white chocolate cardamom) are served with a bitter chocolate tartlet with an orange and mint salad – both lovely although do not outshine the gorgeous, tasty main Soho plates.

On the flip side from the Sparkling Sundays launch, Cinnamon Soho have their afternoon tea menu, aptly named ‘High Chai’. A twisted take on afternoon tea dishes it includes three tiers of Indian delicacies such as Bombay potato bonda with green chutney; tandoori chicken and chutney sandwiches; Bhangra lamb sliders; and sweet mouthfuls of Malabar plum cake and bitter chocolate tartlets with dates and ginger. High Chai is served with a pot of tea for two from their Jing Teas selection.

Indian food with quirky British touches (ie magical marmite), Cinnamon Soho is the third restaurant within Vivek Singh of The Cinnamon Club’s collection. Dishes are set around fresh and seasonal Indian cookery and mirroring the sleepless streets beyond, the all-day dining dishes apply from morning up until late.

Sparkling each Sunday, diners can indulge on bottomless glasses of Prosecco or refreshing Mimosas for two hours for £20 every from 11am – 5pm. Cinnamon Soho’s High Chai afternoon tea runs for three hours for £30 from 3pm – 6pm.
