Review: Round Hill Hotel & Villas, Montego Bay in Jamaica

As we made our way up the long drive we knew we were in for a treat, a favourite among Royalty (Prince Harry recently stayed there) and one of Jackie Kennedys favourite hotels Round Hill is one of the best hotels to stay in while in Montego Bay.

Villas are set among the greenery as you drive in – with private pools, terraces and views where you can enjoy wine in the 30C heat and lavish bedrooms, they’re worth booking for the exclusivity, whether you’re going for a few days with the girls or on your honeymoon.

Round Hill is steeped in rich history, timeless elegance and true understated luxury

Our room was a 2-bed cabin, just above the beach, with a perfect view of the sun going down every day over the Caribbean Sea. The two double beds, with soft white linen and a living area had recently been refurbished by Ralph Lauren, who himself can sometimes be found lounging near the beach at the hotel. Every last touch was thought of – with umbrellas in case of rain and luxurious bath products.

The beach was a few steps away and it swept along for a good 500 meters – lapping up the crystal blue waters. If you didn’t fancy the beach the infinity pool was as Instagram worthy as any can be, with the illusion of it literally falling into the sea below it.

Walking to the other side of the hotel grounds there were hammocks to relax on and a spa, if you wanted to relax further. Their visible brilliance facial was particularly noteworthy.

It’s beach bar gave you a great opportunity to watch the sun go down as you sipped on a Margarita or two. Thursday nights also see the hotels guests gather for a manager’s cocktail party – where, for an hour, the drinks are on them.

Round Hill offers award-winning seaside dining

Stepping on to the terrace for dinner it felt like you’ve walked into a movie – imagine tea lights lighting up a dark restaurant amount the trees, a band playing and a slight hint of chatter in the background – the food was just as divine. The food is all locally sourced, with chefs growing their own herbs and spices on the hotels grounds and the menu’s changing with the seasons. We loved the grilled tuna fillet with Caribbean sofrito and the lemongrass Caribbean lobster bisque.

What we really noticed was the real familiarity of the place – the relaxed atmosphere meant that children were left to play and parents caught up with friends over a drink or two. It was one of those rare places where you knew generations of the same families would keep returning to year after year.

Round Hill is also in a unique position – with the hip strip just 30 minutes away – where you can taste jerk chicken and party the night away at reggae bars. Also, a drive just an hour away takes you down to the 7-mile beach in Negril, with glorious golden sands, you can also stop off at famous spots like Ricks Cafe.

Rooms start at £250.
