A home-cooked Sunday roast with lashings of rich gravy is perhaps the meal we all look forward to the most every week, but London’s top restaurants and pubs are set to steal your mum’s crown.
We’ve eaten our way around the English capital, taken stock and then eaten some more to provide you with a round-up of London’s finest Sunday lunches.
These are London’s roasts with the most — places that offer crispy-outside-fluffy-inside potatoes, cracking crackling, puffy great Yorkshire puddings and not forgetting, the finest veg. That’s on top of the super quality and richly-flavoured meat, of course.
So, without further ado, here are our top four picks for the best Sunday roasts to savour in London this autumn.
The Game Bird at The Stafford London
Served in the historic surrounds of The Stafford London, Sunday lunch at The Game Bird is a traditional affair. Executive Chef James Durrant offers starters such as Game terrine with piccalilli; Celeriac soup with Shropshire Blue; and Loch Duart salmon rillettes with horseradish. To follow, the star of the show is the Roast British beef served from a trolley with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and lashings of gravy. Desserts comprise British favourites such as Eton mess; Treacle tart with crème fraiche sorbet or Lemon posset with blueberries and shortbread. (Served 12-3pm every Sunday, priced at £35 for two courses or £40 for three courses).
Plum + Spilt Milk at The Great Northern Hotel
For a Sunday roast in the heart of King’s Cross, the Great Northern Hotel’s beautiful restaurant, Plum + Spilt Milk, offers 28-day aged Mey Selections’ sirloin of beef (£24), or Slow roast Suffolk pork belly (£22). Both are served with Duck fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and seasonal vegetables. Those looking for a true Sunday feast should opt for the Mixed pork belly and roast beef platter, extra potatoes and stuffing (£26pp, min 2 people), the Whole roast corn-fed chicken, sage & onion stuffing (£46 for 2 people), or the Mey Selections’ Chateaubriand of beef (£75 for 2 people). A Sunday well spent. (Served 11am-4pm every Sunday).
D&D restaurants
Completing the weekend’s favourite feast with bottomless red wine, this autumn four D&D restaurants have collaborated with Bordeaux Wines to bring diners the Red Roast, available throughout October at Butler’s Wharf Chop House, Paternoster Chop House, Skylon, and New Street Grill. The restaurants are serving a variety of quality cuts, with Waveney Valley pork belly, Roast Aberdeen-cross sirloin and Braised Welsh lamb shoulder at the two Chop Houses, Hereford sirloin of beef overlooking the Thames at Skylon, and sharing platters including a Tender rack of Welsh lamb and Roast free-range chicken for two at New Street Grill. Suffolk pork belly and a four rib of Hereford beef make perfect weekend feasts for groups of up to 10 guests at the Grill, too. All roasts can be enjoyed with bottomless Bordeaux wine for £15 per person and are available every Sunday throughout the month of October.
Meraki
For an alternative to the traditional English roast on a Sunday, contemporary Greek restaurant Meraki has just launched its Big Fat Greek Brunch. The Celebration leg of lamb is 1.8kg of succulent meat, slow cooked with herb crust and caper salsa verde. Serving 6 people, it costs £120. The lamb is also available on the a la carte menu throughout the week.
