Restaurant Review: The Gun, Canary Wharf in London

By Natasha Searle   |

The Gun is a charming gastropub located in Cold Harbour near Canary Wharf, with an outstanding view of the beautiful River Thames, glancing over to a towering O2. The menu is rich and varied with great options, including plenty of choice to suit my vegetarian companion, using seasonal ingredients and putting a contemporary twist on pub classics.

A special dining experience awaits at The Gun – a Grade II listed pub in Docklands boasting exquisite views across the Thames

Apparently, the pub dates back to the early 18th century but took its current name from the cannon which was fired to celebrate the opening of the West India Import Docks in 1802. Lord Horatio Nelson used to meet his mistress in the pub in what is now known as The River Room. There are several rooms that are perfect for private functions or work meetings, as well as a lovely outside area for drinks as the sun shines, all of which the charming manager, Jean Paul kindly, showed us on a tour of the pub.

I began with a bright and tasty carrot, ginger and lentil soup with coconut cream and a sweet potato crisp. The flavours were well balanced and the juxtaposition of the sweet potato crisp was effective with the smoothness of the soup. I also sampled the perfectly cooked scallops which were both plump and juicy. My companion had the burrata, which consisted of sautéed garlic mushrooms, chives, cheddar tuile, basil, cress. She said the dish was beautifully executed and the different textures made for a very enjoyable plate of food.

Keeping it classic for the main, I opted for the chicken breast with a pulled leg croquette and roasted red onion and thyme jus. The dish was rich and earthy. It showed some fantastic cooking techniques and was very well presented. My friend went for the cous cous with garlic field mushrooms, creamed spinach and lemon foam, which she said was creamy and mouthwatering, although slightly filling.

Away from the capital’s crowds, The Gun is the perfect place to relax by the water, with fine fresh food, stunning wines and a secret gin garden to discover

By this point we were full of delicious food, but still chose the chilled chocolate fondant with chocolate mousse and salted caramel ice cream for dessert, well it would have been rather rude to have had just the two courses! This was as gorgeous as it sounds, especially the salted caramel ice cream which was sufficiently salty and really complemented the chocolate. If you do visit The Gun then I would suggest you taste this dish as it was the showstopper on the night.

Our food was accompanied by a crisp bottle of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which we discussed and were recommended by our lovely waitress.

The atmosphere of The Gun is laid back and friendly. Staff were helpful and polite, making it a great place to go for business or pleasure. They even offer a free car service during the week back to the City. Enjoy al fresco dining or eat in the charming main dining room, there is an area and a dish to suit all appetites.
