Hotel Review: Moxy Hotel Times Square, New York in the USA

By Georgie Bentley-Buckle   |

A new kind of hotel designed for people who value experiences and community over material possessions, Moxy Times Square situated midtown Manhattan steps from the dazzling lights of Times Square, caters itself to the mindset of the modern hotel guest.

Having opened fairly recently in September 2017, Moxy Times Square is the definitive millennial age hotel.

Having opened fairly recently in September 2017, Moxy Times Square is the definitive millennial age hotel. Everything here is adapted around optimum time with the inherent use of technology: from the iPad kiosk check-ins to Netflix in each room allowing guests to log into their own previously curated accounts. With attitude over opulence, the aesthetic of this hotel is what I can only describe as ‘cool utilitarian’ with particular focus on functionality and authentic personalisation.

Transforming an historic Manhattan building into a fun, edgy and dynamic hotel that looks to the future, 612 rooms are also complemented by a hotel bar: Bar Moxy, breakfast café: Egghead, seafood restaurant: Legasea and one of the city’s largest rooftop bars: Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge.

The largest indoor/outdoor hotel bar and lounge in the city and destined to become one of the most popular and design-centric drinking destinations, the Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge attracts huge crowds from across the city.

Having taken the DNA of beach bars and clam shacks to create a playful environment, we dined at Legasea – an American style seafood restaurant. A warm environment with hand crafted materials and a variety of high and low tables and long cocktail bar, here there is an emphasis on local and sustainable produce. Dishes include clam bake with lobster, clams, scallops, corn and new potatoes and a variety of raw bar offerings whilst an impressive highlight which we enjoyed included the seafood tower. Other entrées to order include a land sourced Prime Rib or the Crispy Chatham Cod (a modern twist on fish & chips).

The largest indoor/outdoor hotel bar and lounge in the city and destined to become one of the most popular and design-centric drinking destinations, the Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge attracts huge crowds from across the city. Located 18 floors above the pavements with iconic views of the Empire State Building; it embodies an urban amusement park concept with a grown-up ambience. Complete with giant fun house of mirrors, a revolving lit up carousel of seating and miniature mini golf course, with modern takes on American classics such as sausage & peppers,Maine lobster roll, and the Burger; Magic Hour celebrates modern American life in the heart of its most famous city.

With provocative and thought-provoking design and cheeky touches abound, Moxy Times Square is far from the ideal of the ‘traditional hotel’.

With provocative and thought-provoking design and cheeky touches abound, Moxy Times Square is far from the ideal of the ‘traditional hotel’. With the option of keyless room entry with the use of their app and a digital guest book, Moxy Times Square challenges our concept of a hotel and embraces the contemporary conveniences of technology without being stuffy or at all boring.

Described as ‘your launch pad into the city that never sleeps’, where Uptown and Downtown New York collide – it is also pet friendly, has a 24-hour fitness centre with weekly classes and has its very own barber shop; all tied together with furiously fast and free WIFI.
