Hotel Review: Legado Finca Hotel, in Ibiza, Spain

By Glenn Harris   |

When we hear Ibiza, the first thing that probably comes to mind is fit, tanned 20 and 30 somethings descending for a carefree summer of hard core partying. For many that is a reality and it’s definitely an option when traveling to the sun-kissed island in the Mediterranean Sea.

But for those looking for something else, there’s another holiday experience offered in this enchanting destination. Ibiza is an island of abundant natural beauty along its golden coastline and inland, are gorgeous pine treed mountains, rural farmlands, and charming less complicated getaways. One such retreat where you’ll find a peaceful holiday free of techno beats, entry wristbands and foam parties, is a charming respite of relaxation at the Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel.

The Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel has an interesting heritage. What was once a somewhat neglected 18th century family home and then traveler’s inn has been reinvented into a contemporary art driven boutique hotel by two forward thinking Austrian entrepreneurs.

Andreas Oberkanins and Andreas Lackner (yes, the two Andreas) are successful marketing and fashion executives who fell in love with Ibiza and left the glittering lights of Vienna to create a place that they had only dreamed of. They wanted to create a second home for themselves and discerning travelers looking for a refined yet unpretentious holiday in Ibiza. A simpler kind of holiday offering a true bucolic retreat surrounded by farmlands and the sounds of nature.

What they have created is a comfortable laid back traditional finca experience overlooking the acres and acres of orchards and farmlands just outside the town of Santa Eularia. The two Andreas are your consummate hosts, ready with a warm welcome, advice on what to do and see on the island and are there to ensure your needs are met during your stay.

The Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel is not your everyday five star luxury resort with 400 thread count linen, glittering Murano crystal chandeliers and Palazzo marble floors. However it is a well-designed, gorgeously decorated comfortable farmhouse stay with a lovely mix of heritage design, bohemian chic decor, and just the right amount of flair.

The hotel is a collection of bright alabaster white stone buildings with accommodations and a welcoming reception area with a library of books to peruse, and quirky art pieces to admire. Outdoors are lovely gardens of bright bougainvillea, palm trees, and colorful flowers to explore as well as plenty of areas to relax with a coffee or apertivo al fresco. The finca defines ‘chill’ where a more sophisticated traveler will love to just laze about on the sun terraces or at the sparkling pool on custom made daybeds.

There are 11 rooms and one suite at this lovely boutique hotel, all of which are unique in their design interiors and layout. All feature the creature comforts of a large bathroom and WI-FI, bathrobe, and organic toiletries. Beyond that the star of each room is the décor with custom made wall coverings, unique art pieces, the custom made iron beds and closets. The accommodations have terraces with lovely flowers and sitting areas dappled in sunlight ideal for reading a book or for enjoying a cup of coffee.

The hotel operates primarily as a bed and breakfast however light snacks are available as well as full-service bar throughout the day. Breakfast is exquisite with fresh fruits and juices, homemade breads and locally sourced, organic dishes. On weekends, the two Andreas host their Dinner With Friends where locals and hotel guests partake in an attractive long table dinner.

As luck would have it (or maybe not), the supper club dining experience is helmed by lauded German chef, and third Andreas, Andreas Hoffmann. The dinner party typically includes 20 people, some friends, couples, hotel guests and strangers who enjoy a dinner and conversation over a long evening. The meal is proceeded by canapés and cocktails and includes a three course meal with a menu based on regional organic ingredients from local farmers. It’s a night to meet new friends and have a good conversation while being hosted by two fun and engaging people.

Most guest who stay at the Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel are there for rest and relaxation and to decompress. Time at the pool, reading a book in between naps will fill most days. Spa treatments can also be arranged as well as tours and other excursions which the staff is more than happy to assist in arranging. Guests typically rent a car and will explore the island usually to the smaller towns and villages and away from Ibiza city.

The Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel is a hotel experience that is exactly what many mature discerning travelers seek out. The hotel is a respite of peace and tranquility and as a result there are no children under 16 allowed for this reason. The hotel is also not open all year and typically opens at the end of March and closes mid-November.

The Andreas have taken their vision, inspiration and unique abilities to create a break for the cultured traveler who seeks a less cluttered holiday and chance to slow down in the rural landscapes of this fabulous island. Surely any guest who has the opportunity to stay at the Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel will appreciate the Andreas’ foresight and the rustic charm of their quintessential Ibizan hideaway.
