Cottage Review: Old Oaks Cottage, Reepham in Norfolk

By Ina Yulo Stuve   |

Lying on the eastern coastline of England, North Norfolk is home to the Deep History Coast, unique wildlife, award-winning beaches, and an array of villages and local museums.

Hunting for fossils is a favourite pastime. Norfolk boasts over 20,000 fossils unearthed each year and the Discovery Trail has multiple reference points that mark the spots where prehistoric footprints and a mammoth skeleton were found.

When choosing a place to spend our annual cottage weekend, we opted for the quaint market town of Reepham which is nestled in between the Wensum and Bure Valleys. Founded in 1277, Reepham boasts a 16th century pub and regular antique fairs.

In our search for a place to stay that embodied luxury comfort in a peaceful setting, we could not have done better than the Old Oaks Cottage, a Norfolk Cottages property.

Communication with owners Juliette and Geoff was made very easy right from the start. Aside from paying us a visit to make sure we had everything we needed, they also gave us a number of suggestions for things to do in the area and provided us with some restaurant recommendations as well.

Juliette and Geoff live right next door to Old Oaks Cottage and are in close contact should a need arise, but give guests the space and privacy to enjoy the facilities as they wish.

The cottage is spacious yet cosy with woodburners to warm up the colder evenings

The two-floor cottage has two bedrooms, a bathroom with both a bath and shower, a gorgeous living room with a fireplace, and an open kitchen where we found a welcome pack with snacks and even some gin and tonic.

Juliette had done a beautiful job of decorating the home with festive ornaments to bring in the Christmas cheer. The sitting area with elegant wood furnishings, soft accents, and pops of colour quickly became our favourite spot in the house.

The cottage is situated within the couple’s large grounds and we had access to a private courtyard where guests can take a dip in the open air heated pool or relax in a hot tub.

The local area provides plenty of scope for guests to explore, from beach visits to country walks

During the warmer months, the garden makes for the ideal setting for a picnic or barbecue and the owners are happy to provide a grill for their guests to make use of. We found some walking trails right at our doorstep and spent our mornings stomping through the autumn leaves and taking in the surroundings.

We were pleased to find out that there was a Christmas market on during our visit. We made our way over and revelled in the local crafts and food on offer.

Afterwards, we took a short car ride and watched the sunset at Brancaster Beach. Reepham is truly a fantastic choice for a quiet family or romantic weekend in Norfolk.

With its cosy yet sophisticated charm, Old Oaks Cottage makes for the perfect base for explore all that North Norfolk has to offer whilst still providing a comforting refuge to come home to at the end of a long day.
