Your home will be your pride and joy, so there’s no doubt you’ve chosen the finest, highest quality pieces to complete your interiors. But, while you may have previously stuck with neutral tones, when you’ve got a statement piece to incorporate into your home, it can seem tricky to get it to fit with your existing décor.
From finding complementary colours to perfecting the positioning for your bold accessory, you’ll be pleased to know there are plenty of ways to make sure your statement piece fits in seamlessly with the rest of your home. Here, I will be sharing my top tips for doing so.
Complement your current colour scheme
Adding a statement piece to your home shouldn’t mean compromising on your current colour scheme, so it’s important that you choose pieces that will nicely complement the shades you’re already using. For example, if you have red tassel detailing on your living room rug, why not choose a statement accessory, like a vase or an ornament, that incorporate hues of red to create some cohesion? Selecting just one or two key colours in the room and finding an accessory that incorporates these will make everything look well thought out.
If you’ve got quite a minimal style, and have neutral walls, why not pick a piece that has one or two bright colours on it? This will instantly help draw the eye and add a touch of colour and texture to the room.
Avoid competing elements in the room
Your statement accessory needs to be the focal point of your room, so avoiding any competing elements will be imperative. This means you should only use one bold piece per room in your home to avoid things clashing or looking too cluttered.
If you’re worried about your rooms looking chaotic, try going with smaller homewares, as they will be a little more subtle than larger pieces, but will still make an impact. You could also think about keeping the rest of your room as simple as possible by taking quite a minimalist approach and using a neutral colour palette. Of course, you can build on this over time, but it can help to make things a lot easier when you’re styling your first statement piece of décor.
Find the perfect position
Getting the positioning right for your statement homeware can make all the difference, so giving this some thought will be particularly important. When you’ve spent good money on purchasing a beautiful accent piece, you’ll want to make sure you place it somewhere to ensure it gets the attention it deserves.
Firstly, you should consider which room people will be spending the most time in to give you the most opportunities to show off your statement accessory. Secondly, finding an area within your chosen room that is empty, or only home to a few neutral accessories, will be much more suitable for your standout pieces, rather than those busier areas which have lots going on already.
The right placement will be different for all homes, so take your time experimenting with different positions before you commit to one for your statement homeware. A good way to check you’re sure is to re-arrange and then exit the room and come back in. If your eye isn’t instantly cast to the piece, then repeat until it does.
