5 UK trips for different types of staycation

By Natasha Heard   |

Being told you can’t do something often makes you want to do it all that more, but while we are holidaying in our own homes instead of heading off to those fabulous locations we had initially planned on visiting, we can but dream.

If you’re itching to say au revoir to your home the minute that UK travel restrictions are lifted, we might just have some ideas for your next trip. Though no-one knows at this time when we might possibly be able to freely travel abroad, the best bet will be to start local, so we’ve compiled our five favourite types of staycation to make the best of what there is on offer to suit any type of traveller.

A cottage in the country

Perhaps you crave a cosy retreat wrapped up with a book alongside an open fire or lounging in a hot tub among the glorious countryside surroundings, either way a charming country cottage may just be the spot to soothe you.

A place to unwind in natural and beautiful surroundings, with friends or family, it’s no wonder that the Lake District is one of the most popular UK holiday destinations. Whether you’re looking for a total escape or a base for a hiking holiday, independent cottages in the Lake District will offer you a chance to reconnect with yourself and loved ones within bountiful natural surroundings and say goodbye to your stresses.

A stunning coastal retreat

Carbis Bay Hotel and Estate offers luxury holiday accommodation in Cornwall

If waking up to the sounds of the waves crashing against the beach and the gulls making their morning calls appeals to you then head to the coast for a rejuvenating retreat. With over 7,700 miles of coastline in the UK, from dramatic cliffs to long stretches of fine sand beaches, there’s nothing more mesmerising than watching the waves as they lap the shoreline.

Cornwall offers up some particularly attractive beauty spots and some delightful places in which to enjoy these stunning locations. From the luxury of the lodges at Carbis Bay Estate to the charming retreat of The Lugger Hotel in Portloe on the Roseland Peninsula to the iconic Headland Hotel in Newquay, there are endless places to sit back, enjoy the fresh seafood and take in the spectacular surroundings.

A luxury hotel in the big city

The Dukes London is one of the finest boutique hotels in all of Mayfair

Whether you are a city dweller or not, there’s nowhere quite like the bright lights of a big city to entice. Alongside imposing museums, interesting art galleries, endless shopping experiences, fanciful foods, varied nightlife and incredible architecture, the hustle and bustle of a city trip will always delight. England’s vast capital, no doubt, offers a trip for a traveller with any type of interest and the London pass will offer entry to many of these enviable attractions.

Of course, options of where to stay seemingly go on forever but you’ll want to make sure that you have a premium place to lay your head, preferably with a top-quality restaurant and fancy bar to enjoy too. The areas of Mayfair and St James’s offer central locations for your exploring and boast a fantastic array of five-star hotels such as Dukes London, The Athenaeum Hotel and Residences, and St James’s Hotel and Club.

A holiday on the water

From lovingly restored 19th century sailing barges to Dutch houseboats to traditional canal boats, your UK holiday on the water means you can combine the delights of nature without having to ever leave the shores. Image credit: Umdash9/Bigstock.com

From lovingly restored 19th century sailing barges to Dutch houseboats to traditional canal boats, your UK holiday on the water means you can combine the delights of nature without having to ever leave the shores. Some boats are stationary so you can enjoy the charm of a boating holiday without having to put in any of the effort to move yourself on and you’ll have the benefit of local amenities in place. Of course, if the idea of taking a barge around the canals of the UK and spying nature across the changing countryside is really what you’re after, you’ll be in luck as well.

Expect up to three bedrooms on board with fully equipped kitchens, lounge and dining areas, flat screen TVs and washing machines alongside traditional features like portholes so you don’t forget that you are on the water!

A luxury motorhome wherever you like!

We’re not talking about those cramped old-fashioned caravans, we’re talking total luxury, where your state-of-the-art surround sound system meets luxe interiors to provide you with hotel-like amenities throughout your journey.

You may just fancy heading around the Welsh countryside, combining a shopping trip in Cardiff before taking in the beautiful scenery in Pembrokeshire or the Brecon Beacons. Alternatively, you could take a tour of the national parks of the UK and wake up with nature every day. Perhaps the peace and quiet of the Scottish Highlands is what you seek or a beach to beach experience. Maybe you have relatives and friends dotted around and you’ve decided that this is a great way to see everyone in one go. Whatever your reasons or dream destination, taking your own luxury motorhome will surely offer you the freedom you desire in a lavish hotel on wheels.
