The Elephant Bar & Brasserie – a new destination bar and restaurant – has opened its doors at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate.
The French-style brasserie with a very definite Cornish twist serves the best in local produce, with an ever-changing menu making the most of Cornwall’s natural larder of land and sea.
Situated in the main Victorian White House, the Brasserie offers laid-back breakfast and lunch menus, as well as a sophisticated yet relaxed evening dinner service, complete with a superb selection of wines from the hotel’s cellar.
The Elephant Bar offers a lighter menu and boasts an extensive drinks list, including Tribute, an award-winning local cask ale with next-to-no food miles, from St Austell Brewery.
The beautifully-designed bar & brasserie, by Bristol-based Studio Cwtch, takes inspiration from the Estate’s roots in the Victorian era, and the great Victorian tradition of exploration, with interesting artefacts and objects d’art from across the globe on display, including, of course, several elephants!
The clever remodelling of the original residents’ bar, lounge, dining room and a meeting room has created a stylish and contemporary brasserie that seats 60, and a bar area that can accommodate a further 60 for drinks or informal dining.
Guests can also dine alfresco on the newly-extended terrace overlooking the manicured lawns of the estate, where there is formal and informal seating for up to 50 people. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the Cornish sun, while the kids play with the selection of fun lawn games.
The Elephant Bar & Brasserie also serves traditional English Afternoon Tea and is the perfect spot to enjoy a quintessentially Cornish Cream Tea. Children are welcome too with a mini-afternoon tea option, as well as a tailored menu full of kid-friendly favourites.
With a menu that ranges from homemade beef burgers and traditional fish and chips to Fowey mussels and roast Cornish lamb, the Elephant Bar & Brasserie aims to be a standalone restaurant and bar that will appeal to locals, visitors to the area and guests staying in the Estate’s hotel rooms and woodland self-catering homes.
Jamie Le Freic, General Manager at The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate, said: “We are very excited to open The Elephant Bar & Brasserie at The Cornwall. We have brought together our food and beverage offering under one cohesive brand, which we are really proud of – The Elephant is bold and beautiful, and our chefs have been working hard to pull together a menu that reflects what The Cornwall is about; classics with a contemporary, Cornish twist.”
Ruth Wainwright, Director and Interior Designer at Studio Cwtch, added: “The gardens of the estate apparently used to rival those at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and so it was important to us and our client to acknowledge the roots of the house and the family that lived there. We also wanted to recreate the glamour, theatre & excitement of being surrounded by the unusual and beautiful whilst being waited on, something not many people have the luxury to enjoy very often.”
