The Mayfair restaurant scene gained this Australian steakhouse with an African twist a few months ago and its exceptional menu of prized beef, stylish interiors and welcoming atmosphere has quickly made it a must-visit.
The upmarket spot on Curzon Street is a real treat from the moment diners enter, with a warm greeting on arrival as coats are swiftly taken and you’re led through the dimly-lit corridor (which houses the incredible collection of wines from around the world) to the main restaurant.
Wonderfully authentic with subtle African touches such as rope-lined walls and dark leather furnishings which complement the rich wood tones, the inviting space sets the tone for the culinary experience ahead. With two floors filled with a mixture of tables and booths, the venue comes alive throughout the night from the vibrant yet unobtrusive soundtrack, to the chatter and laughter of date night couples and groups of friends.
Affable staff seamlessly navigate between tables and the kitchen, and there’s a genuine desire to ensure everyone has a memorable night from the onset.
With a wide variety of starters to opt for, the traditional roasted bone marrow comes highly recommended (and didn’t disappoint), but the creamy truffle burrata and Kingfish ceviche, which was refreshingly light and packed with flavour, were personal highlights.
The stars of the show are undoubtedly the thoughtfully curated roll call of steaks from Black Angus from the USA to Australia’s finest Wagyu. Grilled to perfection with their signature basting and a choice of sauces such as fermented chilli and creamy mushroom, the prime cuts of beef were so tender a steak knife was barely needed. Of course, meat lovers who want to elevate their night can choose the Traditional Dry-AGED rib-eye, which are available on request, and best for sharing.
The process from paddock to plate is fascinating, especially the extraordinary lengths the company goes to such as feeding the cows olives and even coffee to achieve the delicious flavours. It’s these finer details that set this place apart from the competition and the results speak for themselves.
Aside from the legendary steaks, the menu also showcases world-class produce and the slow-cooked, chargrilled ribs and seafood skewers proved to be popular amongst the diners on the night. Moreish sides include comfort foods such as lobster mac and cheese, crunchy thick-cut chips and triple-cooked Hasselback potatoes.
Every whim is catered for and in-house sommelier Stefano works wonders with surprise pairings, from pre-dinner cocktails to wine choices throughout the meal. The wine list is extensive and impressive, with something for every palette, from the French Savignon Blanc that accompanied the entrees to the full-bodied Argentinian Malbec with the steaks. And there’s an excellent mocktail menu too.
Save room for dessert as the layered Wagyu fat delice for dessert is unmissable. Expect a chocolate and nut brownie with creamy ganache (mixed with Wagyu fat!), dehydrated peanut butter and coconut ice cream. The dessert of dreams and worth every last calorie.
Spoiler alert! The portions are huge so it’s impossible not to leave armed with several doggy bags, and if manager Pewter is around, he’ll delight in sharing excellent ideas for the leftovers – including his personal favourite, the juicy steak sandwich!
The evening was exceptional so if you enjoy succulent steaks, gourmet sides and a wine list that wows, you won’t be disappointed. Steak connoisseurs, don’t walk, run to The Meat & Wine Co as it truly deserves all its accolades.
