Having recently undergone a transformation, Twelve (previously known as The Farm), in the heart of Clifton Village, is THE place to enjoy a hearty brunch.
Graced with a young, passionate owner, Jen Nicholls, the eatery caters for a wide audience with gluten free and healthy options available along with the classics such a a Full English or sausage sandwich.
A tantalising selection of cakes sit atop a large counter and catch your eye as you walk in. gluten free options sit next to carrot cake, rocky road and courgette, lime and pistachio cake (I’m intrigued!) The café is split over three levels and the light, open and fresh feel of the place is owed to the modern décor.
After a brief look at the menu I decided to try the baked avocado with eggs – a slow mover at first I am told, but apparently customers have come round to the idea. The avocado is cut in half, each piece is filled with an egg then they are popped in the oven. This is served with rye bread, crispy bacon pieces and a tomato and red onion salsa. The avocado is smooth while the eggs are runny, the dense toast is great for mopping up the eggs and lends itself well to a good spot of avocado spreading. The crispy, salty bacon and cool, refreshing salsa is a great combination. As I am eating I spot a few portions of thick pancakes with yogurt and berries being brought out and they look incredible.
After a short break and a delightful cappuccino (local suppliers include a coffee roaster in Bath and Yeo Valley milk) I decided to sample a piece the aforementioned courgette, lime and pistachio cake. The sponge is really close and moist – similar in texture to carrot cake – and it’s simply delicious. The lime adds a little tang, while the pistachio adds a great crunch, and the icing is lovely and sweet; it’s a delicious sweet treat.
As well as interesting brunch options and cake, Twelve also offers breakfast items such as pastries, porridge or a salmon bagel and light lunches. I am definitely a brunch kind of person and, if I lived nearby, this would be a regular haunt for me.
In a nutshell
Bubbly, friendly staff serve up locally sourced treats in a smart modern place with a rustic feel.
