For peerless roasts with all the trimmings or that special place to celebrate Sunday lunch in style, Knightsbridge has some surprising finds for that end of the weekend tradition. We take a closer look at four of the very best restaurants to try this autumn.
The Lanesborough Grill, Lanesborough Hotel, Hyde Park Corner
For the king of Sunday roasts, the only place to head is The Lanesborough Grill at the Lanesborough Hotel, where antique trolleys and tableside carving whisk diners back to a time of old-fashioned decadence. Chef Shay Cooper has created a menu of unashamedly classic British dishes, from starters of Coronation crab salad or sweet garlic risotto to mains of roast sirloin of beef, Scottish halibut, Rhug Estate lamb, and beef Wellington, all prepared deftly at the table by immaculately dressed waiting staff for the ultimate Sunday experience. The cost is £75 for three courses.
Dinner By Heston Blumenthal At Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London
Those looking for a traditional Sunday roast will not find it at Heston’s two-Michelin starred restaurant, but rather experience so much more with Heston’s take on modern British dishes inspired by history. Starters include Heston’s signature Meat Fruit (mandarin chicken liver parfait) and Octopus Frumenty while mains, a Hereford prime rib for two with mustard ketchup and triple cooked chips is on offer. A dessert must-have is the Tipsy Cake with juicy pineapples roasted in full view of the dining room – quite possibly the finest way to finish any blow-out meal in the capital.
Burger and Lobster Harvey Nichols, 109-125 Knightsbridge
Once upon a time, this beef and crustacean brand offered little beyond a burger, a lobster, and a lobster roll. Thankfully things have moved on and today its Harvey Nichols-based restaurant offers seafood lovers a wealth of additional options that include lobster croquettes, calamari, and a lobster Caesar salad, with Wagyu beef and plant-based burgers also ringing the changes. This B&L restaurant also has a very decent kids menu that features, fish and chips, a cheese or plant burger, and lobster roll and fries for mains. The perfect Sunday lunch spot for the family? It could well be.
Hawksmoor, 3 Yeoman’s Row
Steakhouse group Hawksmoor knows a thing or two about Sunday roasts, replicating the traditional method of roasting meats over an open fire for optimum results. The best way to experience its roasts is with its Sunday feasting menu, where diners can choose from any of its blackboard sharing cuts and add trimmings such as cauliflower cheese, celeriac mash and sausage gravy, or try roasted bone marrow and onions (its Yorkshire puddings are also sublime). Don’t hang around though; Hawksmoor tends to sell out of cuts before the day is out, and for good reason.
