Feeling a little uninspired in the bedroom? While it might seem as if everyone around you is enjoying an endless stream of wild sex, the truth is often quite different, and most couples will find that, at one point or another in life, they feel stuck in a sexual rut.
The good news is that with a little effort, it’s easy enough to get out of it, and all it takes to spice things up a bit is to switch up your routine and try something new. From tricky positions to the latest sex toys, there are plenty of ways to freshen things up, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, then the latest sex trends are certain to inspire you.
One of the best places to get some inspiration? Finding out what other people are doing – and while it never pays to compare your own sex life with anyone else’s, there are always some ideas to be had in observing what’s currently hot, and what’s not.
If splurging on lavish hotel suites and expensive designer lingerie isn’t cutting it alone anymore, then these four emerging trends – which have been making some impressive ground in 2021 – are set to dominate the new year. From sadomasochism to mindful sex, there’s something for everyone – the only question is, which to try first?
BDSM
Once a rather niche taste and a taboo one at that, these days, BDSM is becoming increasingly popular amongst wealthy thrill-seekers looking to spice up their sex lives. Encompassing both bondage and discipline, it works on the basis of one partner being the dominator and the other the submissive, and also involves sadism and masochism. Think ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, and you’re on the right track.
It seems that all those long days and nights stuck in lockdown over the past 18 months have got us eager to find our entertainment at home, and from diamond-encrusted handcuffs to expensive silk blindfolds, luxury BDSM accessories have seen a dramatic surge in sales since the start of the pandemic. According to recent research by Ann Summers, we’re searching for BDSM-related content 70 times as more than usual, with searches for sex trends in general up 250 per cent.
Sexual mindfulness
At the other end of the spectrum, sexual mindfulness is another key trend for the year ahead. With the stresses and strains that have come with recent world events, we’re looking for new ways to keep our cool and reduce feelings of anxiety and overwhelm – and it turns out, spending a little extra time in the bedroom could be just the ticket.
In essence, it’s about concentrating on the moment at hand and taking the time to feel sensations rather than rushing towards the end goal. For 2022, it’s going to be all about taking your time, switching off from the pressure of the finish line and making reaching your full pleasure potential a priority.
Not sure how to get started? If you’re familiar with meditation, then it should come easily. Take the time to focus on your breath during your next steamy session and get to a point where you feel at one with your body and its needs throughout, then lie back and enjoy. Simple, yet effective.
Musical experimentation
We’ve likely all indulged in a session or two with some atmospheric music on in the background – but did you know that doing so actually has the power to enhance your sexual pleasure?
Sexual joy and wellness app Satisfyer is taking the experience to all new heights with the introduction of the ‘Music Vibes’ feature on its app-enabled devices, so you can synchronise your favourite sex toy with your favourite tune.
Sexual coaching
If you’re stuck in a rut with your sex life, then it might be time to seek some outside help – and sexual coaching might just be the way to go. While it might seem daunting and perhaps a little intimidating, addressing and working through the hang-ups you’ve either always had or have developed over the years could pave the way for a whole new era of untold sexual pleasure.
These days, we’re happy to invest thousands in health coaches, life coaches and other guides – so splashing out on a sex coach is a logical step if you’re eager to ensure you have all bases covered. Sex therapists provide a safe space in which to explore any of the issues you feel have been holding you back in the bedroom and give you the tools you need to navigate new emotions and scenarios in ways that ultimately make the entire experience more satisfying.
