Whether you’re the kind of person who puts their tree up on the 1st of November or the beginning of Advent, there’s no denying that some festive décor instantly brings joy to your home. From classic colour schemes to neutral tones and bold themes, decking the halls is all about creating a festive space that reflects your style and spirit. Plus, it’s always worth experimenting and switching things up now and then to keep your Christmas look fresh.

If you’re looking for some inspiration this year, the experts at Denby are here to share five of the biggest Christmas home décor trends that will add some festive cheer to your space.

Return to tradition

Remember how magic Christmas felt as a child? This year we’re capturing some of that charm and tradition with nostalgic decorations. Whether it’s a flashback to the 80s or 90s, we’re taking a trip back in time with Google searches for ‘classic Christmas décor’ up 100 per cent since last year and Pinterest searches for ‘vintage Christmas tree’ up 200 per cent.

The decade we’re most interested in? It’s the 90s. Google searches for ’90s Christmas decorations’ have seen an 80 per cent increase since last year, while ’80s Christmas decorations’ have seen a 50 per cent increase. Classic festive motifs like evergreen trees and Father Christmas feature heavily in this look, along with traditional red and green hues and the twinkle of golden fairy lights. Google searches for ‘burgundy Christmas decorations’ are up 110 per cent over the past year. This on-trend colour is perfect for achieving the classic vintage look while still keeping things contemporary.

Wrapped up in a bow

From hair accessories to homewares, bows have been everywhere this year. In fact, Pinterest Predicts has labelled Bow Stacking as one of the biggest trends of 2024, and this Christmas, we’re supercharging these ultra-cute accessories. Google searches for ‘red velvet bows for Christmas tree’ have increased 130 per cent in the past year as festive fans look for new ways to adorn their branches. They’re great for adding a vibrant pop of colour against the greenery, and can even help fill in any gaps for a fuller, more extravagant look with minimal effort.

Handcrafted for the holidays

Looking for something more unique? Handcrafted Christmas decorations are the perfect answer, adding a personal touch to your festive décor. Google searches for ‘air dry clay Christmas decorations’ have jumped up by 70 per cent over the past year as people embrace their inner crafter.

Clay ornaments are also very easy to make – which is perfect considering Pinterest searches for ‘DIY Christmas decorations easy’ are up 200 per cent on last year. You can use cookie cutters to create festive shapes and experiment with paints and imprints to decorate. For example, try placing a leaf over your clay shapes and pressing it in with a rolling pin. The leaf will leave an impression in the clay that adds a stunning natural touch to your Christmas decorations.

If you’re short on time (or skill) but still want to make your own Christmas décor, why not buy ready-made decorations to paint yourself? Google searches for ‘paint your own Christmas decorations’ are up 60 per cent over the past year showing the growing popularity of easy DIY crafts. You can buy these as kits in most craft stores and they’re not only a fun activity but also make thoughtful gifts for loved ones. A Christmas crafts party is a great, low-key alternative to a big festive bash. So, gather your nearest and dearest, some Christmas snacks, and start making some cheerful memories!

Candy-coloured Christmas

Christmas is traditionally red and green, but there’s a new colour combo on the block. Google searches for ‘pink and red Christmas décor’ are up 130 per cent since last year as the classic holiday palette gets a playful, vibrant twist. Full of candy-coloured magic, romance, and wonder, this colour scheme is bound to add some instant cheer to your décor. Pair the duo with soft cream and white accents for an enchanting, sugarplum fairy aesthetic.

Earthy celebrations

If you’re looking for more muted décor this season then you’re not alone. Google searches for ‘natural Christmas tree decoration ideas’ are up 140 per cent and ‘natural Christmas decoration ideas’ are up 100 per cent on last year.

This trend brings organic charm and elegance to your festive décor, using earthy tones that reflect a grounded and homely vibe. Think organic colours like fern green, sage, stone, and cream, with a hint of gold or silver for some festive sparkle. Use these to elevate the colours of your own home with subtle nods to the season without going over the top.

Reconnect with nature by incorporating organic materials like pinecones, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, and eucalyptus sprigs. Simple yet sophisticated, these decorations create a warm, cosy ambience. If you’re at a loss for how to incorporate these elements, a simple solution is to put a mixture in a beautiful ceramic bowl. For a beautiful, eco-friendly Christmas style, try rustic garlands, handmade ornaments, and foliage-filled wreaths. In fact, Google searches for ‘natural Christmas garland’ are up 40 per cent on last year, so why not try your hand at a little festive DIY?

Nicola Wilson, design manager at Denby, said: “Just like everyday décor, Christmas decorations have their annual trends – but this year, the latest trend is actually the oldest. We all naturally get more nostalgic this time of year, and it seems we’re carrying this into our décor as well. Traditional festive colours are making a strong comeback, with classic red, green, and gold stealing the spotlight for a warm, nostalgic feel.

“The Evergreen collection embraces the trend this year for natural styling. Think layered natural accents like seasonal greenery, that feel festive but not overwhelming. The Christmas tree motif is made up of hand-drawn shades of green, highlighted with a subtle pop of berry red, to bring a stylish accent to your festive table.

“For those looking to break away from tradition, bold pink and red decorations are also gaining popularity, adding a fresh, playful twist to the holiday season. And if a calm, organic vibe suits you best, neutral tones and natural materials bring a modern elegance that feels both earthy and cheerful. Ultimately, it’s about crafting a look that’s festive but uniquely yours, whether that means embracing tradition, going bold, or keeping it simple.”
