Interior design tips for the summer

The people of the UK are usually looking forward to summer as soon as we get Christmas out of the way. Considering Summer usually only lasts for a few short weeks, it’s important to be prepared as soon as those days hit in order to capitalise on the small amount of sun we actually get. If, like me, you’re sat staring out of the window wishing for longer and warmer days, perhaps consider these 6 steps that will help you to bask in the sun when it finally does come out.

1.) Let in more light
Ever wondered why Brits are miserable about 90% of the time and why we go over the top as soon as the smallest ray breaks the clouds? Well, believe it or not, sunlight is actually important for your health. Not only it a great source of vitamin D, but it is proven to have a positive effect on our mood and to keep that seasonal depression at bay.

To let in more sunlight, check the direction of your furniture and how it sits in your space; ask yourself whether you can you can see the outside from your bed and your couch. If light is limited for these positions, consider moving your furniture around, or adding a window seat. Open your curtains as soon as you wake and leave them open all day, allow your rooms some much needed sunlight and air – you’ll feel much better for it.

2.) Create more space
Just like some people tend to pull winter clothes out of their wardrobes and into storage ready for summer, we also advise stripping back your living space ready for the warmer months. Leave all items that are relevant to summer, such as cotton and linen sheets, and think about removing the big thick winter rug and heavy curtains. This will help let in more space, light and air.

It’s also worth rearranging the kitchen; you’ll find you’ll use a lot more space in the fridge as you buy fresh produce, so make sure you have a freezer and cupboard clear-out to make way for any summer goodies.

3.) Add plants everywhere
A great way of making your interior more summer-y is to bring the outdoors in. Hanging plants are very on trend at the moment and you can easily make hangers with wool or even old shoelaces! Places like Homebase or IKEA sell lovely plants as well as very reasonably priced plant pots.

You can add a spot of colour to rooms by adding colourful plants and flowers of different sizes. If you don’t have much time on your hands; add succulents or cacti, these are not only very popular at the moment but basically fool-proof and need little attention.

4.) Install Velux blinds
If you’ve got a loft or balcony in need of an uplift, then it’s worth considering velux blinds because they’re a fantastic and modern way to control the amount of light in your home. You can find these at most retailers, but Homebase or Jewson are reputable brands that are worth exploring.

Velux blinds allow you to reduce glare and reduce excess heat; they are also designed to reflect about 60% of the sun’s rays. You can also roll the blinds away from the window to let in more light when you need it and they also look aesthetically stunning.

5.) Add Fresh Air
Often in Winter living areas can become deprived of fresh air, so as soon as it gets light out (and warm enough), open some windows and air out your bedroom, kitchen and living room. Now would also be a good time to place the aforementioned plants next to the window to help filter the air and give them some much needed sunlight. Other air-cleaning houseplants include snake plants and English ivy.

6.) Keep your fridge running
During summer, cold drinks are a must. Clean your fridge’s condensing coils to keep it running smoothly throughout the summer months. Use a vacuum cleaner with the nozzle attached to get rid of any lint and dirt.

As mentioned before, it’s a great time to give your fridge a spring clean and make way for all that lemonade and Pimms you’ll be serving this summer!
