Top tips for creating a cosy home this winter with The Tartan Blanket Co

Emma Macdonald has put together her top tips for staying colsie this season, and how to create the perfect cosy home as we head into snuggling season.

The Tartan Blanket Co is known and loved for its range of sustainable natural wool blankets, scarves, and gift boxes. A family-run, company, it was founded in by Emma Macdonald alongside her husband Fergus, and as they say, they live by the ethos of colsie – an old Scot’s word that promotes mindfulness during winter.

Here, it’s all about embracing the darker days of the colder months, slowing down and getting warm and comfy. In ode to this, Emma has put together her top tips for staying colsie this season, and how to create the perfect cosy home as we head into snuggling season.

Create a colsie environment

Grab a cup of something hot, light a few scented candles, and lose yourself between the pages of your favourite book whilst tucked away under your favourite blanket.

Our Lambswool blanket Heather Glen Check is my favourite blanket right now as it’s perfect for wrapping up on a winter night.

The more cushions, the better

My husband might not agree, but I love a sofa with plenty of cushions in all different textures and designs.

Karen Mabon has designed some gorgeous ones like this velvet beauty – plenty of cushions and blankets – the ultimate cosy set up for any winter day.

Savour your free time

Doing something like baking with family gives all the cosy smells, and eating warm cookies straight from the oven on a cold, wet day is just bliss.

Similarly you can never have enough candles – instant cosy-home smells and vibes! Our Scottish Bothy Candle reminds me to warm up and slow down.

Make the most of the light

Lighting affects my mood, so having soft lighting, like this beautiful lamp from Ferm Living, is important to create a relaxed environment.

And if you can, get up early and go out on a walk in the daylight while it lasts. I often run along Portobello Beach with my cockapoo, Alfie.

Embrace the season

There are so many wonderful things about winter, and embracing the season can help create a cosy home.

Baking sliced oranges for the tree or for gift wrapping makes the house smell wonderful for days, especially when we add things like clove and cinnamon.

Share warmth and stay cosy

The first thing I put on when I get home is my cashmere socks. I hate having cold feet and the cashmere makes me feel instantly warm and cosy – my go-to pair is my TBCo. Cashmere Socks in Sage.

Then it’s onto making hot chocolate with marshmallows, cream and sprinkles – it’s always the go to with the kids when we get soaked on a school run!
