When it comes to the great outdoors, practical attire is essential – but just because you need some sensible clothing that will keep you warm, comfortable and protected from the elements, is it really necessary to compromise on style?
The experts at Brown Trout – country clothing specialists with over 25 years of experience in providing the finest quality fishing and shooting attire for the fieldsports-loving gentleman, think not, and it’s with this in mind that they have recently launched an inspired new outdoor clothing store for the discerning female fieldsports enthusiast – as well as women who simply enjoy the allure of the Great British countryside, and all that goes with it.
Having opened its doors back in 2002, family-run business Brown Trout has long delivered a personal and professional service, embracing a well-established and reliable reputation amongst its diverse clientele. Inspired by a love of fishing and shooting, the initial venture was headed up by Mr. Tim Brown – and the realisation that there was a gap in the market for beautiful outdoor womenswear sparked a natural progression onto their latest offering.
Launching Dressed at Brown Trout is first in their Harrogate store and later, online, too, it’s now easier than ever for women to get their hands on some chic, stylish and high-quality outdoor clothing – as well as some must-have accessories to take you through all seasons whilst never compromising on looking your best. Stocking some of the best British brands on the market, all in one place, here you will find a country treasure trove of beautiful attire from the likes of Barbour, Dubarry, Hicks & Brown, Clare Shaw and many more.
With autumn fast approaching, we took the opportunity to sit down with Rachel Brown, owner of Dressed at Brown Trout, to find out what the key women’s outdoor pieces are for the coming season.
A stylish scarf
“A printed scarf might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re shopping for outdoor clothing, but it is one of the single best ways to add a bit of flair and personality to a more practical outfit. You’d wear them in the city, and there’s no reason you can’t do the same in the countryside!
“We stock some beautiful Clare Shaw offerings, which are screen printed onto the finest 100% fine silk twill and come in a range of beautiful prints inspired by the various different breeds of game birds seen in the British countryside. For autumn, her limited edition ‘Game On’ and ‘Best in Show’ scarves – as well as many more in her stunning collection – are great choices, and with a rich palette of autumnal colours, they make the perfect finishing touch to any outdoor outfit, as well as being very in-keeping with the season!”
A warm quilted jacket
“Whether you’re a fieldsports lover or just enjoy spending your time in the great outdoors, a quilted jacket is a staple piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe. Being outside for long periods of time, and often standing around, can get really chilly – so this is an essential that will really keep you wrapped up warm this Autumn.
“We love the Barbour Gondola Quilt with decorative stitching to the chest, which comes in chilli red – a great statement piece for the season to come.”
Comfortable long boots
“Ideal for both riding and walking in the country, a long boot is perhaps one of the most practical items you can have, but gone are the days of the clumpy, unattractive footwear that was once the only option for countryside terrain.
“The Dubarry Longford is a knee-high boot with stylish double-buckle detailing, side panel beading and an elasticated heel panel, making for a slim and streamlined appearance that just oozes outdoor style. But the great thing is, they’re completely practical, too. They’re waterproof, breathable and water resistant, so they’re great at withstanding wet and muddy conditions.”
A cosy gilet
“Gilets are really practical for when you need to stay warm but keep your arms free, and they lend themselves really well to the layered look. The Schoffel Chelsea Down Gilet, which is available in two striking colours – fig and navy – is ultra-stylish and comes complete with a cosy fur-lined hood. It’s made with ethically-sourced down and is water repellent, too – so if the weather isn’t on your side, which is often the case in autumn, then it will ensure you are well prepared. The Schoffel Lyndon Fleece Gilet is a snuggly option for those who feel the cold.”
A practical shooting vest
“Technical shooting attire for the huntress! Anyone who is serious about shooting needs one of these in their wardrobe – they’re both stylish and practical in equal measures.
“The shooting gilets we stock are British made and designed by the award-winning Olivia Tullet, and include padded shoulder detailing on both sides to ensure they are appropriate for both left and right-handed shooters. Available in a range of colours, they are really flattering, look great on, and are one of the most popular pieces we currently stock.”
