How to transition your haircare routine from summer to autumn

Here’s how you can successfully adjust your regimen to maintain vibrant and strong hair as the colder months arrive.

The UK’s unpredictable weather, ranging from chilly winds to damp days, can take a toll on our locks. Many of us are left with dry, frizzy, and lifeless hair after a summer spent in and out of the sun. The cooler days require a different method of care. 

With autumn bringing lower humidity and temperature, now is the perfect time to re-assess your routine. Here’s how you can successfully adjust your regimen to maintain vibrant and strong hair as the colder months arrive.

Hydration is key

After a summer of fun, your hair can be left parched and craving moisture due to the sun and sea salt. If you’re finding that it feels dry and brittle, this could be a result of prolonged exposure to UV rays and chlorine from swimming pools, both of which can strip its natural oils. 

Spend autumn focusing on replenishing lost moisture. Deep conditioning treatments twice a week should help to restore sun-drenched hair. Products containing ingredients such as argan oil and shea butter are ones to look out for. 

Include a leave-in conditioner in your regular wash day to protect against the drying effects of cooler air. 

Add volume and fullness 

As the humidity drops, you may notice a flatter and less voluminous appearance. A good hair thickener for men and women can make a significant difference, adding body and fullness. 

Apply to dry locks before styling and reapply for even more volume and a fuller look that lasts throughout the day. This helps if you’re struggling with thinning strands as well as providing a refreshing boost.

Embrace a nourishing haircare routine

With the change of the seasons, it’s the ideal time to switch up your shampoo and conditioner to more nourishing formulas. Reduce breakage and strengthen with sulphate-free products that contain keratin or coconut oil. 

Although it may feel unnatural, washing your hair less throughout the week is beneficial for its health. As you allow your scalp’s natural oils to condition it, you avoid removing important and healthy components. This does, of course, depend on your hair type. 

Combat seasonal hair shedding

The natural growth cycle means that it’s not uncommon to notice an increase in hair shedding during autumn. This phenomenon is typically a result of the transition from the growth phase (anagen) to the resting phase (telogen).

To minimise these effects, remember to be gentle when brushing and styling. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle instead of a hard bristled brush and avoid tight hairstyles that cause tension.

Prepare for weather changes 

The weather is another factor that can lead to damage. Protective hairstyles, such as braids, buns, or twists, are a great way to shield your hair from wind or cold. Opt for styles that suit your texture, as some are better suited to coily and curly hair. 

If you often use heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant beforehand to prevent further damage. Lock in moisture and create a protective barrier against the elements with oils and serums too.
