Luxury jewellery brand Edge of Ember launch new Protection Collection

By Felicity Williams   |

Edge of Ember is the London-based accessories brand that creates classic and personal jewellery that you’ll want to wear every day. And now, Lynette Ong, the founder and creative director, has brought out a new line, The Protection Collection, which has been specially designed to promote positivity.

Expect new talisman inspired medallions, and evil-eye symbols to welcome positive energy and good fortune. You’ll be in good company too, as the pieces are loved by famous faces such as Meghan Markle. Learn more about this sustainable jewellery brand from its founder.

Tell us about how you started in the jewellery industry and your motivations

I worked in finance before starting Edge of Ember, but I wanted to do something creative, and finance definitely wasn’t creative! Jewellery has always been my passion, I love that it can transform your look. I used to love wearing all black back in my younger days and jewellery would always be the highlight of my outfit.

When I started Edge of Ember in 2014, I was inspired by the social model of TOMS and Warby Parker and knew I wanted to create an e-commerce brand. I am from Singapore and having travelled around Asia when starting Edge of Ember, I knew I wanted to work with Asian craftsmen and highlight their incredible craftsmanship. Creating a socially responsible company was also very important to me too.

We believe that fashion should look and feel good. That is why ethical production and honest social responsibility are the foundations on which I built Edge of Ember.

Who is your customer?

Smart, stylish and talented women who want quality fine jewellery as part of their daily lives. There is no rule book, or customer ‘type’, we love seeing our customers style our jewellery differently, all of our pieces can be mixed, matched, layered and personalised to individual taste, that tells their story.

We are also seeing more male customers too, men’s jewellery has really upped its game over the years. We have a capsule collection at the moment but launching more pieces this year to meet the demand. Everything starts with the customer and what they want.

What can we expect from the new line?

We’ve expanded our bestselling Charmers Collection to include more talisman-inspired medallions. Now more than ever, we all need a little something to welcome positive energy and good fortune into our lives and keep those bad vibes at bay.

There were three key themes that inspired the pieces; protection, empowerment and bravery. These symbolic pendants are worn to ward off the bad stuff, spread the good stuff and to remind you to listen to your inner voice when things might get a little tough.

The Protection Collection is the first drop and features the evil eye symbol, available in a chunky chain, necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and a much asked for anklet.

Liberty Collection launches in February and Fierce in March – watch this space!

What were the inspirations behind the range?

Our new Protection pieces were designed to radiate good vibes, banish negativity and protect the body, soul and spirit. They feature blue topaz and sapphire stones, and the traditional evil eye symbol that has been passed on through centuries.

All pieces are made from recycled gold. Sustainability and ethical production are at the core of our business.

Which is your top pick from the new collection and how do you style it up?

I haven’t taken the Trio ring off since we received prototype samples weeks ago. It’s so different from any of our pieces and I love the way the gemstones catch the light throughout the day. The evil eye chunky chain is also a personal favourite, styled with the finer evil eye necklace – I’m really into mixing chunky and fine at the moment.

What’s been your career highlight to date?

I don’t know if I can name one specific one, there have been a few pinch-me moments. When Meghan Markle wore three of our pieces, that was a pretty special week! The global attention on our brand that followed has been incredible.

We have grown 3-4 times each year the last few years, and our small team has grown into a passionate and driven group of ladies driving this growth trajectory – and that’s something that I’m incredibly proud of.
