A luxury stay in the Cotswolds? Most people don’t have to be offered twice – especially if it’s at the stunning five-star Ellenborough Park Hotel, close to Cheltenham. But now there’s an even more attractive option for fitness fanatics, who can visit the hotel to take part in a one-day fitness programme, as well as enjoying the opulence of the hotel and its picturesque surroundings.
The programme, recently launched at the hotel by YOLO Retreats, offers sessions suitable for both intermediate and advanced exercise lovers, providing a full day of health and fitness at different levels of intensity to suit your varying physical abilities. And, at the end of the day, you’re free to relax, unwind, and luxuriate in the hotel’s spa – or, of course, have a drink or two in the bar.
Created by fitness professional James Golden – AKA The Fitness Pro – who brings with him a huge 20 years of experience in the industry, it aims to allow participants to focus on their fitness and wellness whilst luxuriating in opulent surroundings and a mindful environment in the country. And, set in 90 acres of lush green countryside, the 15th Century country estate of Ellenborough Park is undoubtedly the best place to do it.
Each session delivers a range of HIIT, strength training and yoga, supported by a healthy approach to food – helping participants to have the mindset when it comes to both eating and exercise.
From resistance and cardiovascular workouts to weight training, all combined with yoga and meditation sessions, the course is designed to help you both to ‘Move your body and focus your mind’.

How important is nutrition on the programme?
The saying ‘abs are made in the kitchen’ is very true and the training can only provide the desired result if the nutrition is disciplined enough to support your training objectives. We are what we eat, and it is important to consume healthy produce at the right times during the day, and in the appropriate portion sizes. Our programme will deliver an understanding of how to eat clean, as well as the role of nutrition in supporting an effective training regime.
Some people may find a day of fitness intimidating. What would your advice be to them?
Guests can come along either individually or in a small group, but ultimately, all participants for the day will come together through the experience. The programme is structured in a way that won’t break people and is developed to inspire you. The experience is designed to improve an understanding of training and nutrition to help people to live a better lifestyle.
What kinds of exercises are included in the training sessions, and which is your favourite?
The day has two phases of training either side of lunch. The morning will consist of a metabolic HIIT class alongside a core and yoga class. The mid to late afternoon part of the day will supply further group-based strength training and a fitness workshop to help you understand how to train smart. My personal favourite is the intro HIIT class in the morning, as it is the perfect start to the day and makes you feel happy to be alive.
What inspired you to get involved with this programme?
People have certainly become more conscious of living healthy in recent years, and I wanted to be part of an experience which educates in a practical yet fun environment. The sessions will genuinely invigorate you and provide an absolute unique fitness experience. Working with likeminded professionals to support the guests to live healthily is highly rewarding, and passing on my knowledge to others is my passion.
What advice do you have to stay motivated while exercising?
Set objectives and create a plan that supports you. So many people apply themselves to exercise but have no direct focus or goal. It is good to challenge yourself, and to ultimately reward yourself if you meet your objective.
Outside of the training programme, what other activities would you recommend within the YOLO programme?
My moto has always been ‘knowledge is power’, and we can supply DNA fitness testing to help you understand more about your responses to certain food groups and how your body reacts to exercise. This can be invaluable in helping you to understand how to get results. Highly recommended!
What is your best advice for those trying to lose weight?
Losing weight is easy when you know how. Using the expertise of a fitness professional can be valuable to help create a plan and buddying up with a friend with the same ambition as you can provide added support – especially when the going gets tough. I cannot recommend highly enough the importance of having a plan to support you on your journey towards your goal. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
