The biggest makeup trends for summer 2020

By Melanie Kruger   |

With spring now in full swing and summer just around the corner, many of us are looking ahead to a time when we’ll be able to get out and enjoy life to the full again – and, with the weather warming up and plenty of extra time on our hands, it’s the perfect time to start planning your summer look.

Summer is the season to have fun with your makeup, and to experiment with colours and textures that you wouldn’t in the winter. Having said that, it’s also an excuse to pare back your look and embrace your natural complexion – depending on when and where you are going.

The good news is that, according to summer runway trends, bright, uplifting colours are having a moment, which is the breath of fresh air we could all do with right now. Plus, you can get your hands on some free colourful makeup to try out by reviewing some of your favourite products at Love to Slay.

So, whether you’re looking to go wild and completely overhaul your looks for the summer months, or would simply love to add some subtle interest to your tried and tested makeup routine, look no further – because these are the trends to jump on board with. And, with more time on our hands at the moment than we might usually have, what better opportunity to get practicing?

Neon eyes

Going straight in at the deep end with perhaps the boldest and most unashamed trend of them all, neon eyes are set to be big news for summer 2020. Debuting at the Oscar De la Renta Spring 2020 show, a glamorous string of models sported this as a statement look, allowing their eyes to do the talking against a more understated overall look.

This look is perfect for those daytime Ibiza pool parties where glamour is the order of the day, allowing you to go light on the foundation and lipstick in the hot weather and let your skin breathe. Think bright pinks, oranges, blues and greens and you’ll be on the right track.

You can complete the look by applying mascara. First, apply one layer of mascara to your bottom lashes and then make sweeps across the top lashes with your mascara wand. Consider curling your lashes or simply put on long-lasting lash extensions at home for a more glamorous and chic look.

Floating liner

If graphic accents are your bag, then look no further than the upcoming floating eyeliner trend. Yara Shahidi’s modern take on Mod eyeliner is a quick and easy win – simply draw an extended cat-eye with your favourite liquid liner, then another across the crease – before carefully connecting the two at the outer corner. Be sure to let it dry thoroughly before heading out to avoid any imprint marks from blinking.

Why not combine two trends in one – like Shay Mitchell’s neon green graphic liner? It’s a look for the bold and the brave, but on the right occasion (think VIP Access All Areas at one of this summer’s festivals) it could definitely be pulled off. Head to Fenty Beauty for some bold bright neon liners that have impressive staying power.

While sparkle might often be a look we associate with the festive season, glittery festival vibes with always have a place in the summer, too

The glitteratti

While sparkle might often be a look we associate with the festive season, glittery festival vibes with always have a place in the summer, too. In the Off-White show, Gigi Hadid’s chunky glitter look, which spanned the bridge of her nose for an entirely extroverted take on the trend, signalled that summer 2020 was set to be a season to go all out. Marc Jacobs’ glitter cheeks was another bold look, and inspiration to get creative, with no holds barred.

As standard glitter can be damaging to the environment and is usually non-biodegradable, be sure to look for eco-friendly alternatives that do not contain micro-plastics.

Bold blush

Bold blush will be taking centre stage during the summer months – which is perfect, when you consider that it’s the season most likely to add a little colour to your cheeks, anyway. But this time, the catwalk went over and above, with the likes of Sies Marjan sending models out with a brave look featuring blush that extended across the temples and eyelids. Lili Reinhart’s peachy-pink monochrome makeup, by Patrick Ta, is a great example of how this look can translate into the everyday.

Watercolour eye makeup

Continuing on with the colourful trend, eyelids are set to get a statement overhaul this summer, when traditional nudes will be swapped with bold watercolour combos, with contrasting shades blended together to create eye-catching colour clashes.

Blues, in particular, are set to have a moment, with pastels, teals, turquoises and royal blues all expected to make space for themselves over the summer.

Whichever way you slice it, it’s clear that bold colours are the look to be seen sporting in 2020 (if you need even more inspiration then check out this great feature on 36 more makeup trends). And, with some of the world’s biggest luxury beauty brands – from Burberry to Chanel – rolling out new lines for the occasion, it’s the perfect opportunity to update your makeup bag.
