As summer slowly draws to an end, it’s time to say goodbye to the golden, glowing goddess makeup look that has taken us happily through the season – making way instead for a fierce, bold and colourful autumn makeover that is all about pushing the boundaries – and ourselves.
Last autumn and winter, soft plum and subtle pink eye shadows paired with a rose stained lip and velvet complexion dominated – so what can we expect in 2018/19?
This season, it’s all about being bold with your look. Although make-up is there to enhance your features, sometimes putting a bright, punchy colour on your lips makes a strong statement – an armour of self expression. As Vogue’s contributing Beauty Editor, Pat McGrath says, “If there is one thing that rebellious make-up celebrates, it is the notion of power” – and she couldn’t be more right.
For a bold eye this season, it’s all about diving into deep purples, royal blues and midnight crimsons – and with a range of beautiful new eyeshadow palettes to choose from that comfortably fit the bill, prepare to be spoilt for choice.
Charlotte Tilbury’s latest palette in Glamour Muse is a must have – her palettes are both designed and renowned for achieving looks that can be taken “from dusk to dawn’ – boasting a range of subtle and more daring shades that allow for the creation of a variety of show-stopping looks. Start with a purple pearl undertone paired with a shimmering lilac for day, and move onto the richer, more glamorous, vibrant purples by night. All of these shades are super simple to wear, and to make that bold statement with a purple smokey eye, just rub your finger gently into your chosen shade and pat it onto your lid, building the pigment as much as you want to for either a light a wash of colour or a more striking and impactful finish.
Another eye shadow palette that should be top of your beauty shopping list this season is Huda Beauty Desert Dusk, which comes complete with eight mattes, six pressed pearls, three duo-chrome toppers and one pure glitter. Boasting every colour you could need for a range of possible combinations, each of the pigments are beautifully vibrant – choose from a subtle, natural eye with the soft caramels and sculpting browns, or a real statement look with a bright pop of colour.
Purple can seem a little daunting to wear on your eyes, so if you’re not feeling quite brave enough then why not opt for a punchy lipstick instead? The NARS semi matte lipstick in Scarlett Empress is a makeup bag essential for the season to come. To create the perfect canvas for a more natural look, dab a little Elizabeth Arden 8 hour onto the centre of your lips and softly bend out with your finger. Doing so before applying your lipstick will ensure that your lips are only lightly stained, yet still hold the mesmerizing darkness of this show-stopping shade. A matte lipstick is pigmented enough that it will last for hours, taking minimal effort to make a big impact.
If there is one thing you should try this season, it is a dash of purple. Dare to be noticed.
