From the Grand Canyon to bustling New York City and Los Angeles to the shores of Florida, there are plenty of fantastic and well documented places to visit in the United States. However, there are also whole host of lesser-known places to visit in the US that promise an equally as exciting time, that often get overshadowed by the more talked about destinations.
For your next visit in and around the United States, why not consider one of the following four destinations to incorporate something a little different into your trip?
Nevada – for caving
We begin in Nevada, which is perhaps best known for the glitzy casinos of Las Vegas and the structural engineering phenomenon of the Hoover Dam. However, there are many other spectacular places to visit in Nevada, with the Lehman Caves one of the lesser-known places you must add to any Nevada itinerary.
The Lehman Caves can only be entered with a guide and tours have been held in the caves since the 1920s. The history of the caves can be traced back millions of years and there is a wealth of fascinating history, geology, and ecology to learn about from the experienced tour guides. The Lehman Caves offer a stunning otherworldly experience you will find difficult to replicate anywhere else in the United States, which is why it makes it the perfect addition to this list.
Kentucky – for adventure
Adrenaline junkies are always looking for their next fix of exhilaration and adventure, but many may not have planned on heading to Kentucky for such a quest. Continuing the theme from above, Kentucky is home to some huge caves but there is one activity in-particular that can only be found in the Bluegrass State.
The Louisville Mega Cavern is home to the only underground zipline in the world. There are six ziplines in total, 100 feet off the ground and they come complete with two rope bridges. In addition, you will find the world’s only underground aerial ropes challenge course plus the largest indoor bike park on the planet. So, if you want to try something different, in a unique setting, then the underground zipline at Louisville Mega Cavern is the activity for you.
Delaware – for the national park
There are several high-profile national parks in the United States but one of the lesser-known and more recently established national parks can be found in Delaware. The First State National Historical Park is spread across several locations in Delaware and is home to some fabulous historical buildings, including the NCC Courthouse, Federal Arsenal from 1809, John Dickinson House, Ryves Holt House, Holy Trinity Church, Fort Christina, Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, and Sheriff’s House.
Beaver Valley, which is Quaker-owned land, has become part of the national park and is home to extensive hiking trails and kayaking, making the First State National Historical Park one of the leading lesser-known places to visit in the US for those wanting to experience history and nature.
While Nevada also has Las Vegas and Kentucky has the horseracing, Delaware also offers a few ways for visitors to try their luck at winning a jackpot, or at least get close to it. After all the exploring and adventure is done, one might wish to spend some downtime trying their hand at an online casino game, which is legal in Delaware. Time2play can come in useful when choosing where to play as you will find reviews of all the best Delaware online casinos and those from around all the legal online gambling states in the US.
Texas – for great pie
For the last stop on our list, we head to Texas which is where you will find the small town of Round Top, sitting between Austin and Houston. This town has a population of fewer than 100 people but is home to some of the best homemade pie in the world at Royers Round Top Café.
When you step into the café, which is beginning to get a name for itself across the country, take in the eclectic décor, sit down and order yourself one of the many mouth-watering pies, all of which are made fresh at the premises each day. You may think people are crazy for travelling to eat a pie but once you’ve experienced one from Royers Round Top Café, you will understand why this place makes it onto our list.
