Though most countries are perfectly prepared to welcome visitors at any time of year, there is no doubting that some absolutely thrive in cooler months, especially those with resplendent mountains to ski down, Christmas related activities to immerse oneself in and cities to explore without the blistering sun beating down.
Of the wide range of nations that litter Europe, there are a seemingly endless array of historical sights to explore, treasures to uncover, food to be devoured and so much more to see and do across the continent that it’s difficult to narrow down where might be the best fit for a wintry escape. It’s also worth noting that British citizens will soon (November 2023) have to register with the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and meet the requirements in order to visit any country in the Schengen Area of Europe – that’s a large section of Europe.
From the delights of Italy to the slopes of Switzerland and fanciful France and Finland, we take a look at some of our favourite European countries to visit when winter comes around.
Belgium
This compact country is brimming with medieval towns, captivating cities, Renaissance architecture, chocolate and beer, among many other delights, of course. Wandering the streets of ancient city Bruges and taking in the incredible sights such as the 14th century Stadius, Markt Square with its 13th century belfry and winding canals that boast an array of highlights worth viewing from the confines of a canal boat is a must and winter makes this incredible place light up. Cosy up in a pub and enjoy the famous beer, just wrap up warm when you venture outside, and enjoy the picturesque Christmas markets that are sure to delight.
Finland
This northern European country houses capital city Helsinki with its range of notable picture-worthy buildings such as the Helsinki Cathedral and museum of Finnish and international art, Ateneum; the 18th century seat fortress, Suomenlinna; and Senate and Market Square.
Head north and you’ll see how the country truly comes alive in winter, from warming up in saunas to spotting the Northern Lights to heading to the home of Santa Claus and crossing the Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi in Lapland. Meet the man himself and his reindeer, revel in the magic of Christmas and take part in a range of activities designed to bring joy to all visitors.
France
From skiing in the French Alps to the magic of Paris to all of the towns, cities, villages and coastal haunts that buzz all year round, France is a place that never sleeps and so a visit in winter can be just as special as at any other time of the year. Beat the crowds in Paris and see the beauty of the Eiffel Tower, dine on delicious fare, shop in some of the most luxurious boutiques and marvel at the wonders in the galleries and museums.
French Christmas markets will be worthy of a visit, and winter sports enthusiasts will be in awe at the likes of Chamonix, Val d’Isere and Courchevel.
Switzerland
Though a stunning country at any time of year, it is during winter that compact Switzerland really comes alive. Skiers, snowboarders and the like will be happiest gliding down the snow-covered peaks at resorts such as Zermatt which sits below the Matterhorn, Verbier and St. Moritz. Luxury hotels, top-notch restaurants, spas and shopping fill in the gaps between all the winter sports at these luxe resorts.
Medieval quarters, stunning landmarks, opportunities to treat yourself to quality timepieces and delicious chocolates, Christmas markets galore and so many other ways to spend time across the country’s cities and towns are in great supply.
Italy
The fascinating history and sights, the incredible food, endless shopping opportunities – all of this you can find year-round across Italy.
Skiers should add Cortina d’Ampezzo, Courmayeur, Cervinia and Livigno to their lists, while culture vultures will no doubt be pleased to get a good viewing spot at some of Rome and Florence’s must-visit sights. The Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Pantheon in Rome, and the Duomo, Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia will be much more accessible in winter and there certainly won’t be a shortage of decadent pasta dishes at any time of the year.
