The youngest country in South Asia, Singapore, affectionately known as the City of Lions, is a dynamic place. Singapore is a legendary holiday destination that has a lot to offer up to any visitor as well as a wealthy, very clean and healthy place to be, too. We take a look at some of the best sights to see in Singapore, just in case it isn’t already on your wish list.

Marina Bay Sands

One of the most famous landmarks to visit in Singapore has to be Marina Bay Sands. With more than 2,500 hotel rooms, theatres, shopping malls, museums, and casinos, it is undoubtedly one of the largest man-made attractions in the country. This structure holds a magnificent infinity swimming pool, perhaps one of the most prominent features of this resort, which is located 57 floors above ground level, is more than 150 metres long, and has an impressive 67-metre arm.

Marina Bay Sands is also home to seven famous chef restaurants and some of the most expensive casinos in the world, but the crown of this spectacular building is a 34-metre-long sky park, from where you can view much of Singapore and take enviable panoramic photos from.

Singapore Flyer

Singapore Flyer is considered to be Asia’s largest observation wheel, and at 540 metres above the ground, boasts 360-degree views of Marina Singapore Bay. Located at the farthest point of the bay, Singapore Flyer offers one of the most beautiful views of the city; with the metropolis on one side and the sea on the other. Visiting here promises more than just a unique viewing platform, as the terminal building also offers a variety of upscale restaurants that also offer those stunning views, while allowing you to sit and eat in a peaceful atmosphere and enjoy the waterfront. You can also enjoy the Greek theatre or relax in the tasteful garden and enjoy the seemingly natural plants and springs of the Asian rainforest region.

Kranji War Memorial

The Kranji War Memorial is a quiet place, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is located in the northern part of Singapore. It is the last resting place for thousands of Allied soldiers who lost their lives in the region during World War II, and it is also the burial place of Singapore’s presidents. The names of the soldiers who fought in the war are also recorded, so surviving family members have a place to commemorate their relatives.

Merlion Park

Merlion, the national symbol of Singapore, stands on the banks of Merlion Park, providing a popular photo location for both locals and visitors. The Merlion is a legendary Singapore animal with a lion’s head and the body of a fish, and the structure stands at eight metres tall in the park after it was moved from its previous home at the mouth of the Singapore River. The statue is made of cement fondant, the eyes are made of small red glasses, the skin is made of porcelain tiles and it weighs around 40 tons. In addition to taking a photo at the statue, visitors can take a river cruise in the park and visit attractions such as Boat Quay and Clarke Quay along the Singapore River.

Marina Barrage

Marina Barrage is a dam built 350 metres from the Marina Channel. By retaining seawater, it transforms the marina basin into a body of freshwater, resulting in stable waters throughout the year that are ideal for water sports. At the site, there is a collection of grocery and beverage stores along with attractions, which include the Singapore Sustainable Gallery and the Green Roof and Solar pages. Visitors can also learn about NEWater techniques by enjoying some multimedia games and interactive learning experiences at NEWater Visitor Center and Singapore Discovery Center.

Cavenagh Bridge

One of the oldest in Singapore, Cavenagh Bridge is also the only suspension bridge adorning the Singapore skyline. At more than a century old, the bridge is famous for its beautiful, suspended struts and was spared from demolition, with it standing today as a pedestrian only bridge linking people between the cultural district at the north bank and the commercial district at the south of the Singapore River.

The 280-metre-long pedestrian walkway was built to create a truly unique connection to the country’s second integrated resort, Marina Bay Sands, and is a symbol of the landscape, proving to be a bridge like no other. With four viewing platforms to provide enviable views of the skyline and events taking place within the bay, the bridge is also illuminated at night proving to be quite the spectacle.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Completed in 2002, the performing arts centre divided opinion with its modern design, but thrills guests with its 1,600-seat concert hall and 2,000-capacity theatre. Lovers of the performing arts will enjoy a visit to the Esplanade, which is located in Downtown Core, near the mouth of the Singapore River. Named after the nearby Esplanade Park, this place attracts many a visitor to the Singapore art scene and impresses with its wonderful acoustics for performing various music.
