The change from summer to autumn often brings with it the desire to get away before a cold, wet and blustery winter truly sets in, and this time of year always proves to be a great time to seek out some end of year sun. The only problem you’ll face is deciding where to go on short notice. If you’re looking for some all-inclusive entertainment, fine dining, great destinations and non-stop fun, then consider getting yourself booked on a cruise.

The perfect time to sit back, relax and let someone else do the effort for you, cruises are the ultimate in top-notch service, while evenings and days spent cruising can be spent exactly how you want them to be – full of endless entertainment or perhaps something a little more zen like spa visits, cinema outings and some quiet time reading the latest piece of fiction to land in your Kindle.

Making the ideal type of last-minute holiday, cruises are already set up and ready to go with itineraries mapped out, restaurants and entertainment set up and a whole host of luxurious facilities ready and waiting for their guests. All you have to do is book your room and turn up to the port. If you’re ready to cruise at the last minute, then, to make it even easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of destinations you can head to this autumn for that last minute trip you’ll never forget.

Departing from Rome/Civitavecchia

This autumn, why not consider a cruise that meanders through the islands of the Mediterranean? Set sail from Rome’s nearby Civitavecchia port and wake up to gorgeous, pristine waters, magnificent views, and the site of centuries-old architecture as you head to Greece and Turkey and arrive back at a new Italian destination.

Crete

Forming the largest island in the Greek Isles, Crete is a well-sought-after destination for many reasons. Glistening waters, fantastic white sand beaches, delectable Greek cuisine, and rich culture are just some of the reasons Crete should be at the top of your holiday list.

You’ll want to consider a tour to the Zeus Cave, a sacred cave in the Lasithi plateau. Associated with the birth of Zeus, you’ll enrich yourself with mythical study while taking in extraordinary views from the plateau. Finish off your day with fresh-from-the-earth Greek food and discover what it is to live as the Cretans do.

Istanbul

Sailing on from Crete, cruisers might just find themselves in Turkey, a place filled with colour, exquisite architecture, and music among many other things. Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that encapsulates the centuries of rule and reign from the Roman to the Byzantine Empire and is know as the place where east meets west as its straddles both Europe and Asia.

You might want to see the famous Hippodrome Square, where Romans once held chariot races. Neighbouring the Hippodrome is an Egyptian column in memorial of the Byzantine Empire, and adjacent to the column is a fountain from the Ottoman Empire. Ancient histories collide in this melting pot of culture and rule.

Naples

Naples, Italy.

Most famously known for its Pizza, Naples is not to be missed. This beautiful hilly city is lined with colourful Italian houses and mazes of cobblestone pathways winding throughout the city. Although the city houses three million city-dwellers, it contains itself so well you’d think you were in a small town.

Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii are close by; the famous volcano that preserved an entire Roman civilization in time. Pompeii will take the best part of your day but is absolutely worth the commitment as you walk through the centuries-old city preserved by ash. Gorgeous Roman tiles and artwork still line the walls of the manors and dwelling places of the Roman elite.

Departing from Southampton

Take in the beautiful city of London before you take the one-hour trip and say bon voyage to the UK and set sail to Portugal and Spain. This autumn, cruisers will get fantastic ocean views, days on top-rated beaches, dancing, and lots of tapas!

Oporto

oporto harbour

Oporto is a beautiful coastal city in Portugal known best for its wine production. The colourful buildings lining the port will take your breath away as you approach the dock. Take a walk down the beautiful piazza and indulge in the local cuisine.

Before you set sail, make sure to visit a winery in Duoro to learn more about Oporto culture and economy. Many wineries offer three-hour tastings, lunch, and a beautiful ride on the river back to port.

Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Tenerife Canary Islands

The largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Tenerife is known for its celebrations including music, parades, and dancing. Tenerife is known for its ocean life and water adventures, making it the perfect place to kayak, whale and dolphin watch, and swim in the sea.

Check out the Mercado Municipal Nuestra Senora de Africa, featuring fresh food stalls and enjoy a hand-selected picnic on the beach.
