No visit to Canada’s West Coast would be complete without a stop off in buzzy Vancouver, and luckily, there’s a major airport on the outskirts of the city – Vancouver International Airport – which many visitors to the region choose to fly into to kick off their trip.

A cosmopolitan city nestled between mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver has it all, and your time here can be as busy or laid-back as you’d like. Be sure to visit Granville Island’s bustling public market, where you can taste a diverse range of cuisines and shop for arts, crafts and souvenirs – then, take a stroll through Stanley Park, where you’ll find an impressive juxtaposition of verdant forest and stunning beaches, passing through a unique urban oasis along the way.

The Gastown district is perhaps one of the most charming areas of the city, with its quaint, cobbled streets and historic Victorian buildings. There’s a great culinary scene in Vancouver, with eight Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from in total. And fans of the arts can enjoy a packed calendar of shows and events across the numerous theatres and venues the city has to offer, too.

The island gem of Victoria

Just a stone’s throw from Vancouver – or should we say, a short ferry ride away – you’ll find pretty Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. Check in at the iconic and opulent Empress Hotel for a night or two of sheer decadence, and spend your days here exploring the Inner Harbour, where you’ll find the impressive Columbia Parliament Buildings – then head to the picturesque Butchart Gardens and lose yourself in the maze of peaceful pathways amidst vibrant spring and summer blooms.

If you’re a history buff, then make sure to squeeze in a trip to the Royal British Columbia Museum, which showcases captivating exhibits on natural history and indigenous culture throughout the year.

Whistler’s snow-capped mountains

Whistler is an upmarket resort town about two hours from Vancouver

If you dream of immersing yourself in Canada’s snow-capped peaks and indulging in an adrenaline-fuelled adventure or two, then the world-renowned mountain resort town of Whistler, to the north, is the place to be. In winter, skiing and snowboarding in Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are the order of the day, whilst during the summer months, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, or zip-lining against an impressive alpine backdrop.

Of course, no mountain resort town is worth its salt unless it offers up some opulent resorts and spas, and you’ll find plenty of both here. So if you’re less about the action and more about the rest and relaxation, then don’t shy away from coming here, as it’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries.

The vibrant après-ski scene in the village, which is filled with cosy restaurants and charming boutiques, is a must, and one of Whistler’s biggest highlights.

The natural beauty of the Pacific Rim National Park

If breath-taking scenery is your bag, then you’ll find it by the bucket-load in the Pacific Rim National Park, where you can stroll through lush forests and along the sandy shores of Long Beach, or head out on the water for a spot of kayaking, paddle boarding or surfing, depending on the weather.

There’s plenty of wildlife to be seen here, so don’t forget your camera. If you’re lucky, then you can spot everything from black tail deer, Vancouver Island wolf and black bears to raccoons, cougars and short-tailed weasels – but with this in mind, it’s wise to make sure you’re clued up on how and where to see them safely, and booking yourself onto a guided walking tour with a knowledgeable guide is advisable.

A truly memorable experience

With stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and outdoor adventures, Canada’s West Coast has it all. If this little lot have whetted your appetite but you’re feeling overwhelmed at the thought of all that planning, then take a look at some Canada sample itineraries with Little America – then pack your bags and prepare for a luxury getaway to remember.
