La Caserne Chanzy Hotel and Spa in Reims is a new Autograph Collection hotel that echoes the heritage of its setting. Situated in a city possessing a hidden web of over 250km underground champagne cellars, here is a place also centred around its iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral which holds behind its ancient doors over 900 years of French coronations.
Hues of gold cast a warm sheen across the champagne inspired hotel that opened this August with many of the 89 rooms and 17 suites enjoying a striking view over the façade of its notable neighbour – the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Revelling in a central location, three principles orbit the interior concept of La Caserne Chanzy Hotel and Spa: heritage, knowledge and initiation to spark the senses for all who step inside. Led by Julie Fuillet Studios, materials are a reflection of the heritage of this regional champagne city and include cork, wood and glass combined with a palate of gold with touches of green and beige.
La Caserne Chanzy Hotel and Spa is the city’s former fire station building and a key contribution to the city’s Art Deco portfolio. Architect Christophe Ballan (Thienot Ballan Zulaica) worked closely in partnership with the local design office to transform this former old fire station which sat empty for many years into the luxury hotel it is today.
This can be seen throughout the hotel’s brasserie: La Grande Georgette finished in navy blues and touches of red to reflect a contemporary fire station design concept. Named after the former captain of the barracks, this all-day restaurant adjacent to the hotel serves guests breakfast each morning leading until dinner each evening with a popular weekend brunch that extends to 3 pm each afternoon, also drawing in many of the locals.
The foundations of the building have been transformed into a 450 square metre spa facility adding to this Autograph Collection hotel’s luxurious offering. With its separate entrance for non-hotel guests, La Caserne Chanzy Hotel and Spa has collaborated with French brand Deep Nature and cosmetics brand Vinésime to offer a variety of treatments within one of the spa’s five ‘cabins’ alongside an infinity pool with sensory course, a sauna, a steam room, ice fountain and fitness room. Ensuring the overall character of the hotel is continued to be woven throughout, many of the Vinésime harvest grapes from some of the finest vineyards which are applied to their products.
A reflection of its historical and cultural heritage, La Caserne Chanzy Hotel and Spa is perfectly positioned for guests to experience the essence of this French city. With the opportunity to freely enter the Notre-Dame Cathedral which arguably is more impressive than its Parisian counterpart due to the lack of crowds, the city of Reims also opens up many of its iconic champagne cellars where time slows to a standstill. One of the city’s most impressive includes Ruinart Maison, the city’s very first champagne house founded around 290 years ago. Meanwhile, further cultural touchpoints include the local Museum of Fine Arts which displays notable artwork by Rodin, Renoir, David, Monet, Pisarro, Corot and more.
