Lainston House is a beautiful 17th century Queen Anne country house hotel tucked away in the heart of Winchester. Part of the Exclusive Collection, this beautiful red-brick gem is set within 63 acres of stunning grounds, but this isn’t just your typical country estate – it’s a place where you can truly escape. While it has all the charm of a classic old-world property, it still feels modern and luxurious and it’s the perfect little hideaway when you’re craving some much-needed R&R and want to leave the hustle and bustle behind.

As you drive up the long, winding, tree-lined driveway, the property comes into view, and it’s impossible not to be struck by its beauty. Sitting confidently at the front of the sweeping drive, it immediately draws you in.

The reception is warm and welcoming, with wellington boots and umbrellas by the entrance adding a homely touch, just off the reception, you’ll find the restaurants and the bar, ready to explore.

With 50 guest rooms to choose from, there’s something for everyone – ranging from classic doubles to spacious suites, including the signature options. The rooms are cosy and traditional, with the added bonus of different view options.

We were lucky enough to stay in a twin suite, and there were actual squeals of excitement when we were shown around – the room was huge and the epitome of luxury. With its own lounge area, a huge jacuzzi bath, and a shower big enough for a football team, it was wonderfully inviting.

My friend and I had to tear ourselves away from the room – and the complimentary tuck box – to explore the grounds. It would also be ideal for families, with the two-bed setup and plenty of lounge space for kids to sprawl out – a perfect escape for everyone to unwind and enjoy.

Food

Lainston House is a foodie haven with something to satisfy every craving

Lainston House is a foodie haven with something to satisfy every craving. We dined at The Cedar Bar and savoured a mouth-watering three-course meal – we both had steak for our main course, and it was utterly divine. The Cedar Bar is also the perfect spot for drinks and, during the day, the views are breath-taking. In summer, guests can enjoy drinks on the terrace looking out onto the spectacular view.

The hotel also offers traditional afternoon tea, which was in full swing when we arrived, with every table packed. For something a bit more hands-on, their cookery courses in the outdoor kitchen are must-see and do – we had a peek, and it felt like stepping into Peter Rabbit’s garden, complete with rustic charm.

Every dining space at Lainston House is filled with a welcoming atmosphere, whether it’s morning, noon, or night, and with the highly anticipated launch of The Avenue, it’s about to get even better. The new flagship restaurant, led by MasterChef: The Professionals champion Tom Hamblet, features an eight-course tasting menu priced at £125 and boasts locally inspired dishes using the finest ingredients, including produce from Lainston House’s Kitchen Garden. Standout dishes include scallop with anchovy and seaweed pickle, venison loin with onion caramel, and a whipped cheesecake tart with blackberry sorbet. Diners can also expect surprises like the playful ‘squeeze them ins’ finale featuring salted nut nougat.

To top it off, Tom will host classes at the Season Cookery School, teaching techniques and recipes inspired by his MasterChef journey. With The Avenue opening for dinner from Wednesdays to Sundays, offering main dining, a Chef’s Table experience, and private dining in the Tilia Room, I am desperate to return.

To do

Lainston House walks

There are beautiful walks within the grounds, and even bikes for those wanting to go a little further afield. There is also a gym and, of course, the cookery classes but if you just need sometime to escape then Lainston House and their amazing rooms truly will do the trick.

For those extending their stay, Winchester is just a short drive away, offering fantastic shopping and the chance to explore its magnificent cathedral. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, the area has plenty to offer, from fly fishing and visiting Jane Austen’s House to swinging through the treetops at Go Ape or family-friendly fun at Marwell Zoo and Peppa Pig World.

In a nutshell

I truly feel as though I left a piece of my heart at Lainston House – the hotel, the exceptional staff, the outstanding food and, of course, the beautiful room. It is, without a doubt, a remarkable hotel that has a home-like feel with all the luxury you could possibly want.
