In the heart of Vietnam’s vibrant capital, Hanoi, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi stands as a testament to refined luxury. This historic masterpiece, with its colonial architecture and lush gardens, has been welcoming travellers for over a century and I was eager to check in to enjoy a bit of its opulence.

The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is a true icon, blending French sophistication with Vietnamese warmth. Its rich history is evident in every detail, from the charming façades to the elegant interiors and this legendary hotel has been a sanctuary for discerning travellers, dignitaries, and celebrities alike.

The lobby, with its chandeliers and marble floors, exudes a sense of grandeur that transports you to the standards of a bygone era, while the Metropole offers a variety of rooms and suites, each meticulously designed to provide the utmost comfort and luxury.
Room
The hotel boasts a range of beautifully appointed rooms and suites to choose from across two wings. The Opera Wing, with its contemporary elegance, offers spacious rooms adorned with fine art and luxurious trimmings. In contrast, the historic Metropole Wing takes you on a journey through time with its colonial stylings and antique furnishings.
Every room and suite is a haven of comfort, featuring plush bedding, marble bathrooms, and modern amenities. Whether you choose a room in the Opera Wing or the Metropole Wing, you’re guaranteed a restful and indulgent stay.
Food and drink
Dining at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is a culinary journey in itself. The hotel features several world-class restaurants, each offering a unique dining experience.
Le Beaulieu captures the essence of French cuisine, offering signature dishes like coq au vin and tarte tatin. Expertly prepared, these dishes ensure an unforgettable dining experience.
The Spice Garden is a must-visit for authentic Vietnamese cuisine, offering a flavourful journey through the country’s culinary traditions. From fresh spring rolls to fragrant pho, the menu celebrates the best of Vietnam.
The Bamboo Bar is one of the hotel’s more casual offerings, and provides a sleek poolside setting to enjoy cocktails and light bites.
Spa and wellness
A highlight of the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is Le Spa du Metropole. This tranquil oasis invites you to indulge in relaxation and rejuvenation, offering a wide range of treatments, from soothing massages to luxurious skincare rituals. Each treatment is designed to pamper your senses and enhance your well-being.
The spa’s skilled therapists use a combination of traditional techniques and modern therapies to provide a truly rejuvenating experience. After a day of sightseeing in Hanoi, a visit to Le Spa du Metropole is the perfect way to unwind and revitalise.
To do
The hotel’s inner courtyard is home to a serene pool area, surrounded by lush greenery and comfortable loungers and for those who prefer to stay active while travelling, the hotel provides a well-equipped fitness centre.
One of its unexpected features is the underground bunker which, during the Vietnam War, was used to accommodate up to 40 guests. As well as diplomats, those who took refuge in it include notable figures like anti-war activist Jane Fonda and Joan Baez. On Christmas Day in 1972, Baez recorded her song ‘Where Are You Now, My Son’ as US bombs rained down on Hanoi.
The bunker was sealed off after the war, but was rediscovered during the renovation of the Bamboo Bar in 2011, and restored. The hotel runs daily tours every day at 5 and 6pm, and as well as the history of the hotel during that time, they give a fascinating personal insight into the people who lived through this bloody conflict.
While the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi offers an enchanting retreat, Hanoi beckons with its rich cultural heritage and attractions. The hotel’s central location makes it easy to explore the city’s most iconic landmarks and savour its culinary delights. A good place to start is by strolling round the picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake, located in the heart of Hanoi, giving it a perfect setting to take in city life.
A visit to Hanoi wouldn’t be complete without exploring the historic Old Quarter. This bustling district is known for its narrow streets, ancient architecture, and vibrant street markets, and you can soak in the sights and sounds of Hanoi’s old-world charm as you explore the labyrinthine alleyways.
The vibrancy of Hanoi makes it easy to forget about the dark times in the country’s past, but a delve into history is a must. A good place to start is the Hoa Lo Prison Hanoi, where political prisoners were held as well as US airmen including former US presidential candidate John McCain. For a great overview of the history of Hanoi, and some great insider tips, it’s worth booking a trip with Hanoi Backstreet Tours, who will take you round the sites in a historic military vehicle.
In a nutshell
The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi offers a harmonious blend of French colonial charm and Vietnamese warmth. Whether you seek historical exploration or simply a tranquil escape, this legendary hotel promises an unforgettable experience. From its elegant rooms to its world-class dining and rejuvenating spa, the Metropole embodies the epitome of luxury in the heart of Hanoi.
