Hotel

Within a stone’s throw from Moorgate Station, next to Finsbury Circus, and close to Liverpool Street, the luxury South Place Hotel is ideal for all of those who want to stay within close proximity to the City.

Along with its 80 stylish and sleek bedrooms, there are also plenty of dining and drinking options within the hotel to suit your mood and the occasion. As the hotel says, it has been designed for ‘wining, dining and dancing’ followed by a comfortable sleep, and that’s exactly what is delivered. As for the hotel’s aesthetic, it was designed by Conran + Partners, and thoughtfully combines space and light with inviting and playful touches to complement the vibrancy of its locale.

South Place Hotel is located in the heart of the City of London, on the fringes of the Barbican and buzzing Shoreditch

To work off all the great food on offer provided by South Place Chop House and the Angler Restaurant, guests have access to a wellness centre featuring a gym and spa. The gym is open 24 hours a day and boasts state-of-the-art equipment by TechnoGym, from cardiovascular machines to a range of free weights, all complete with complimentary towels, water and earphones.

Susanne Traudt, general manager of South Place Hotel said: “The hotel is lucky enough to have many USPs. In our bedrooms we are known for our baths: spacious, relaxing and of course bubbly! The perfect way to enjoy a relaxing city break. We also have our stunning Secret Garden, located on the first floor of the hotel. This little oasis in the heart of London changes with the seasons and also has a retractable roof – so you can hang out in this space all year round.

“Finally, our Michelin-starred Angler restaurant. Using passion and precision, Gary meticulously curates each dish to celebrate the taste and textures of the finest ingredients, using a variation of techniques, flavouring and seasoning.”

There’s complimentary high-speed internet, a fully stocked mini bar, and a television with a whole host of movies.

Food and drink

The South Place Chop House offers a menu of classically British food

There are plenty of food and beverage offerings at South Place, whether you’re wanting to indulge at a Michelin star restaurant, take in some hearty and comforting British food, or if cocktails are more your thing, they have you covered. First up is the South Place Chop House, which can be found on the ground floor.

Here, classically British food is on offer which makes use of seasonal and carefully sourced cuts of meat and fish, all of which are complemented by craft beers and a list of wines. If you fancy a tipple (or three) then go for their bottomless brunch and traditional Sunday roast options, let the drinks flow.

Also on the ground floor is the comfortable and casual 3 Bar, kick back and enjoy your morning coffee here, catch up on emails, or as the hours pass enjoy a cocktail or partake in their gin menu (there are over 40 gins to try here). There’s also the South Place Secret Garden, a hidden oasis. The bar features waterfalls, palm trees and hanging flowers ideal for more dressy cocktails. There is a retractable roof in case of changeable weather, as well as heaters to maintain the tropical climates whatever the season.

The Michelin starred Angler Restaurant boasts panoramic views of the city

For a city speakeasy, the Le Chiffre is your spot. Named after the original Bond villain, it gives that sleek Bond atmosphere along with a discerning look and range of distinguished spirits and cocktails. This space is also up for exclusive hire, so it can be your own speakeasy for an evening.

While on the rooftop, you will find the Michelin starred Angler Restaurant which boasts panoramic views of the city. Led by executive chef, Gary Foulkes, as expected he serves up fine seafood dishes using locally sourced ingredients. For special occasions, there is a semi-private table seating up to 14, which shows the chefs at work and views of iconic City landmarks such as The Gherkin and the Salesforce Tower (a.k.a The Heron Tower). This restaurant leads onto the Angler Terrace, which serves lunch and by night a romantic spot for cocktails, champagne and fine snacks.

To do

In the heart of the City of London, South Place Hotel is also on the fringes of the Barbican and buzzing Shoreditch. For city points of interests, take in the history of St Paul’s Cathedral, The Monument, the Bank of England and Guildhall. Then there’s the Barbican area which highlights the very best 1960’s concrete Brutalist architecture, with the arts-focused Barbican Centre (be sure to check out the Barbican Conservatory). If you’re looking for edgy foodie offerings and on-trend bars of East London, head to Shoreditch which is just five minutes away on foot.
