With travel plans cancelled indefinitely, the idea of a luxury staycation during lockdown is becoming more appealing than ever. And many will be pleased to read that you don’t even have to travel outside of the M25 to find the perfect getaway.

One of the places remaining open to guests during this time is the aptly named, STAY Camden. STAY apartments are contemporary, fully serviced, boutique dwellings that have all the comforts of home but in a stylish, luxury setting.

Located in the lively tourist spot of Camden, and just a five-minute walk from the tube station, STAY apartments are tucked away from the hustle and bustle, right by the tranquil Hawley Locks canal. I almost missed the discreet entrance that was hidden behind a wrought iron gate, ideal for securing peace and privacy.

As I stepped into the contemporary lobby, its neutral Scandi design gave it a warm and sleek appeal, and even with the visible signs of Covid-19 safety measures everywhere, it hadn’t reduced the steady flow of guests milling in and out.

The apartment

The spacious apartments have a clean contemporary decor with luxury touches

Despite its modest outset, there are 169 serviced apartments, ranging from classic one-bedroom apartments to premium three bedroomed abodes. All come with a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, and all the other amenities you would need from home.

They also come with the mod-cons including a virtual concierge via in-room tablet, interactive Smart TVs and speakers. Designed for long stay guests, travellers and families alike, I couldn’t wait to see what my apartment had to offer!

Located on the top floor, I was taken to my home for the night which was a premium two-bedroom apartment. The door opened into a spacious hallway and open-plan living area, with a high-spec, glossy kitchen, dining area and cosy living room space.

Bedrooms are tastefully decorated with chic accessories to match the neutral styling

The Scandi interior design was minimalist yet stylish, with a nice mix of rustic and luxe gold touches and it was clear that much thought had gone into every style detail. From the wood furnishings and leather armchairs to contemporary mirrors and light fixtures, it felt like a well curated show home, even the wardrobe hangers had a luxury gold trim. I particularly liked the clean feel without all the clutter or unnecessary décor.

The apartment contained a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a twin-bed guest room, separate bathroom, and private balcony. Both rooms were tastefully decorated with chic accessories to match the neutral styling. Throughout the apartment, there was plenty of storage space as well as amenities such as a washing machine and ironing board hidden away.

But the pièce de resistance had to be my very own roof-top terrace at the top of the wooden flight of stairs. At just a press of a button, the skylight opened to reveal an equally spacious area that overlooks the London skyline. An excellent finishing touch to an apartment that makes you feel at home but with an upscale penthouse feel.

Food

The apartments are ideally located to enjoy the foodies paradise of Camden

Camden Town is a foodie’s paradise. Bursting with an array of fancy restaurants, gourmet pubs and tasty street food to indulge in. From Greek and Italian, to Thai and Brazilian cuisine, there is something to suit everyone’s tastes. If you’re after delicious, authentic South African food and spectacular settings, Shake Zulu is London’s largest South African restaurant, and a go-to place for fine dining.

The Mezzanine level is also a champagne and cocktail lounge – ideal to relax in after your meal. If you’re after a taste of the Caribbean, Mango Room is another popular restaurant. Offering modern Caribbean cuisine, signature dishes include ‘Camden’s famous’ curry goat, char-grilled chicken and their sea food platter. And for those who prefer gastro pubs for a spot of brunch, The Lock Tavern is a favourite ‘local’, serving award-winning burgers and wings.

To do

Vibrant Camden is known for its famous markets and eclectic mix of fashion, art and music venues. You can take a stroll along the high street to explore the many bespoke shops, or visit the uber-trendy, Buck Street Market (formerly Camden market). As London’s first eco market, these converted shipping containers house 26 sustainable food brands, vegan restaurants, roof-top bars and 50 ethical, boutique retailers. Bear in mind to check their website for updates and to find out what traders are offering delivery service.
