Footsteps from the frantic frenzy of Times Square where the colours are as flamboyant and loud as the actors filling the Broadway seats, The Chatwal Hotel gracefully sits on 44th Street. It is close to the city’s media and financial giants as well as Broadway theatres.
Designed by Stanford White, The Chatwal’s 1930s Empire Art Deco look has been re-imagined by Thierry Despont. The Hotel has 76 guest rooms with a selection of suites enjoying seating and greenery on a landscaped terrace. With Louis Vuitton trunk inspired wardrobes to rain showers and Egyptian cotton sheets, no detail has been overlooked and no indulgence spared to restore glamour and sophistication to every aspect of this beautiful residence.
My bedroom, or should I say boudoir, made me feel like I had been transported back to the 1930s. Black modern furnishings were paired with antique and vintage style trunks – the best of old and new made this boutique hotel interesting and evocative.
The technology in the room was, to say the least, impressive: Tim Cook, the CEO of apple, or Bill Gates would be completely at home here. The juxtaposition of vintage style furniture and state of the art technology in the hotel reflects what life is like in New York itself: new creations blending perfectly with the original fabric of the City – offering someone as memorable as your first Broadway production.
The Chatwal also offers relaxation that any spa savvy individual would relish. The Red Door Spa by Elizabeth Arden has a truly special atmosphere – it is an oasis of calm and tranquility where guests can escape the mayhem of Midtown, New York. Red Door Spa at The Chatwal offers a sumptuous sanctuary for both overnight guests and Manhattanites alike. The spa features three treatment rooms, three private changing suites with steam showers, a relaxation lounge with spa aperitifs, a manicure and a pedicure studio, a saltwater lap pool, a Jacuzzi plunge pool and a fitness center. After a few days in the city, including a New York style birthday celebration at the weekend, my skin was craving special attention and hydration: the Elizabeth Arden Pro Renewal Facial using copious amounts of creams, lotions and serums had the desired effect – my face was brightened and refreshed making me look as if I had just completed dry January!
The entrance to The Chatwal is relatively small and discreet and might easily be overlooked but as with the rest of New York, the most unassuming entrances often lead to the most exciting interiors. This was definitely the case with The Chatwal, fusing Art Deco with modern day comfort, creating a glamorous and sexy boutique hotel – a secret location you might want to keep to yourself … you don’t want to lose your room after all!
