Words by Judith Baker

New York’s Wall Street may be synonymous with money and power, but this historic part of Manhattan has a new buzz and energy that can be found in its vibrant bars, fashionable restaurants and pretty shops.

The Financial District, or Fi-Di as it is called, is now crowned by one of the city’s most imposing new hotels. The Wall Street Hotel, found on Wall Street and Water and Pearl, combines the district’s old school grandeur with contemporary style and elegance.

The hotel lobby has a glamorous Art Deco inspired décor

There is a quote from photographer and style icon Cecil Beaton etched on the main window of the hotel and his distinctive influence is seen throughout, with its classic black and white photographs, artwork and elegant décor. The classic building itself is the former Tontine Building, which housed New York’s first Stock Exchange in 1792.

The hotel is owned by the Paspaley family, recognised as the pioneers of the Australian South Sea pearling industry. Pearls are referenced in numerous parts of The Wall Street Hotel, from pictures to pearl shaped cocktail accessories in the room and pearl lighting fittings.

Rooms and suites have a Parisian beaux arts ambience

I entered the glamorous lobby with its Art Deco feel and was transported to my dramatic 11th floor room, one of 180 rooms and suites which have a Parisian beaux arts ambience. Cool blue walls and luxurious cream drapes, wooden floors and elegant cool marble fittings create a calm atmosphere. Luxurious touches include heated flooring in the bathroom and Frette bed linens. There is a custom entertainment system and Bang and Olufson Bluetooth speakers.

Food

La Marchande is the hotel’s sophisticated brasserie serving French dishes with a modern flair

The Lounge on Pearl with its palms and soft background jazz has a 1920s feel and was my favourite spot in the hotel, perfect for curling up in one of the colourful tub chairs sipping a cocktail and watching the world go by on Wall Street.

Dining is a stylish experience at La Marchande, the hotel’s sophisticated brasserie on the corner of Wall Street and Water where Michelin starred chef John Fraser creates classic French dishes served with a modern flair.

Everything the modern traveller expects is available, from a 24-hour fitness centre with cross fit and cardio equipment to bespoke service offerings. For those who don’t want to either work, or work out, there is much to see in the local area.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous nearby attractions

At 11 Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), is one of the city’s most impressive buildings. Get there early to hear the opening bell rung at 9.30am each morning. The famous bronze sculpture of the Charging Bull just around the corner from Wall Street was a gift to New Yorkers from Italian artist Arturo Di Modica and some visitors rub it for luck.

A few minutes’ walk from Wall Street is Battery Park, the southernmost part of Manhattan and home to an original sandstone war fort, castle Clinton. It offers a great view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, so is a good spot for taking pictures. Built in the footprint of the original Twin Towers is the sobering National September 11th memorial.
