Hotel Review: VP Plaza España Design, Madrid in Spain

By Natasha Bazika   |

Spain’s central capital, Madrid, is a city of elegant boulevards, manicured parks and rich repositories of European art. Few cities boast an artistic pedigree quite like this. Artists from Dalí to Picasso and Goya adorn the walls of the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.

With such a rich history, the city prides itself on preserving its past life, but there’s a new hotel that is bringing cool back to the city while still nodding to its past and bringing guests into the new century. VP Plaza España Design is a five-star hotel boasting restaurants, sky bars and spacious rooms with a view. The hotel, which only opened last year is already turning heads and its history has just begun.

The VP Plaza España Design has a central location in the city and commands panoramic views from the Sky Bar and pool

The luxury hotel commands a privileged site in the capital being just steps from the famed shopping street, Gran Via and across the road from the Royal Palace. The Almudena Cathedral and the Temple of Debod are also just a stone’s throw away. In a city like Madrid, walking is the best way to see and experience everything it has to offer, which makes VP Plaza España Design the perfect option for your first, second and third time visiting the city.

The hotel boasts 214 rooms with nine different types of rooms to suit the needs of each guest, from standard to premium and of course, a presidential suite. Each room has soundproof and thermal break windows, work desk, plasma TV, automatic blind control and everything you could need to be comfortable in Madrid.

What makes the hotel cool is its design and artistic character. Design, art and architecture takes center stage showcasing some of the best Spanish architects and designers, including the B720 architect’s studio and the Cuarto interior and Studio Gronda interior design studios.

In the reception area, Dario Urzay welcomes guests with vibrant paintings while Héléne Bergaz’s avant-garde approach of photo montages with meteorites adorns most of the bedrooms. Another eye-catching piece is the Atrium, a waterfall sculpture that falls from the glass-bottomed rooftop pool down to the bottom floor. The best viewing point is from inside the pool, but guests can also walk along the bottom to see the “splash.”

The gastronomy options are the best part of the hotel. At the top, there is Ginkgo Restaurant and Sky Bar—one of the best rooftop bars in Madrid. This spectacular rooftop terrace offers both covered and uncovered areas and will win your heart with its almost 360-degree city views.

Here, guests will enjoy a selection of Mediterranean and Asian flavours along with contemporary cocktails served in a chic setting clad in green and red velvet banquette seats and surrounded by lush green plants. In the late hours of the night, the bar and lounge transforms into a nightlife hotspot with live performances including DJ sessions that will have you dancing all night long.

Downstairs, Botania is another chic restaurant clad in velvet furnishings and serving international cuisine with a lean towards oriental fare. The restaurant combines two different green areas, one on the front side facing Plaza España and the other in the Adalusian patio, which sits out the back.

Whether this is your first trip to Madrid or you’re returning, VP Plaza España Design is a hotel to consider, if you’re looking for a modern establishment, with great offerings and a cool design.
