Two new glass igloos frozen into a secluded Icelandic lagoon are about to open to guests for their first winter. The accommodation is central to a new experience launched by Off the Map Travel and will give guests a front row seat to the stars, and famous Icelandic Northern Lights, from a hidden part of the Fjallsarlon glacial lagoon on the southern coast of Iceland.
Floating in the summer months, the two isolated rooms will freeze into the ice at a secluded location on the lagoon during winter, accessed by an all-terrain vehicle. Located away from light pollution and with panoramic glass walls and uninterrupted views north, the igloos are designed to increase guests’ chances of experiencing the Northern Lights.
Isolated from other tourists in an uninhabited corner of Iceland, the new accommodation is a perfect way to reconnect with nature and the stunning Icelandic snow covered wilderness.
The Glacier Lagoon Adventure trip by Off the Map Travel is now available to book from mid-January to the end of March.
Alex Minnis, chief operations officer of Off the Map Travel, said: “This is a magical way to experience the Northern Lights and beauty of the Icelandic wilderness, whilst sleeping in a secluded igloo-like room, frozen into a lagoon of glacial meltwater.
“The Vatnajokull glacier is a popular destination for day visitors, however, until now, guests couldn’t stay and experience the lagoon up close overnight during the winter months.
“The new igloos are ideal for couples who not only want to see what Iceland has to offer, but want to experience it in a truly unforgettable, one-of-a-kind way.”
The new accommodation measures nine metres squared, including a generous double bed, bathroom, panoramic windows, Wi-Fi and hot drinks. Inside the igloo, guests will be warmed by central heating, providing them with an adventure experience without the hardship.
“Looking out from the panoramic windows of the new rooms, you get a true feeling of the imposing glacier framed by the vast arctic sky which, at night, lights up with stars, and if you’re lucky, the spectacular, dancing Aurora Borealis,” adds Minnis.
“It’s isolated, quiet, and the dark skies make it one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights.”
Available through Northern Lights travel specialist Off the Map Travel, a new five-night Glacier Lagoon Adventure itinerary includes a night in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, followed by a self-drive road trip to Myrdalsjokull with breath-taking views of the southern coastline.
Guests will then enjoy a privately guided scenic tour and dinner at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon before spending a night beneath the stars, or famous Icelandic aurora, in their private glass igloo overlooking the stunning Vatnajokull glacier.
During the day, guests can choose to marvel at the glacier by daylight or visit the nearby Diamond Beach with its black sand and scattering of sparkling shards of ice. After their night on the lagoon, guests will continue their drive along the coast to Hotel Ranga, and the last night of their trip.
The five-night, six-day Glacier Lagoon Adventure trip costs from £2,499 per person based on two people travelling on a half board basis. This includes all accommodation, 4×4 hire car, private guided activities and dinners as listed. Flights are not included.
