For many of us lazing on a beach anywhere in the world, with silky sand between our toes, basking in the summer sun, whilst sipping on sundowners seems like the perfect escape.

However, times are changing with more people seeking once in a lifetime experiences. Be it walking with wildlife in Zambia, to swimming with sharks in South Africa to hiking in the stunning Norwegian Fjords. With so many amazing adventures on offer it’s hard to know where to start. So if you feel like it’s time to pack away your bucket and spade and pull out your backpack, then here is our guide to our top three escapes from three different continents for any budding adventurists.

Fjord to perfection

Geirangerfjord is Norway’s most popular and most famous fjord

The Norwegian Fjords is a destination of dramatic scenery with its majestic mountains surrounding its glassy fjords. As soon as you hit the road out of the main city of Oslo, the fresh air and postcard landscapes will unfold before your eyes.

There are over 1,000 fjords in total resembling still blue lakes that are actually salt water. Each of the fjords is intertwined allowing you to sail from one to the other. Top of the list needs to be Geirangerfjord, Norway’s most popular and most famous fjord, it’s even part of the Unesco World Heritage Site.

The area offers hiking opportunities that the whole family can enjoy. In this area start with a boat trip from Geiranger which disembarks at Skagehola. From there you commence your trail uphill. It’s steep but the carved steps in the rock and handrails allow you to set your pace. The trail follows the stunning Seven Sisters waterfall – so there’s opportunity to stop and catch your breath whilst taking as you take in the cascading water down the cliff edge.

If you want more than a picture postcard then don’t worry as the landscape offers something for everyone.

Finish your trip at Victoria Falls that straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Named as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World this you can’t get a more nature filled trip.

Sleeping under the stars in Chile

For those really wanting to connect with nature but in the more romantic sense, Chile has the world’s clearest skies. It’s position, climate and nature make this beautiful country a window to above with over 300 cloud free days per year.

Away from the big cities places like places like San Pedro de Atacama, Elqui Valley and Cajón del Maipo offer the ultimate experience, with minimal light pollution, they boast twinkling skies where you can literally spend the night star-gazing underneath an umbrella of nature. From learning about the other planets to searching for a shooting star – this open canopy really is a window to the universe.

Packing the essentials

Remember packing for an adventure is a whole different affair to the traditional beach break. It’s important to only take what you need, because the reality is you’re most likely going to be carrying everything on your back. The experienced adventurer will tell you that you can’t go with with comfortable walking shoes, so invest in the right shoes and don’t cut corners. What you put on your feet will make or break your experience, and of course you need to maintain a sense of style at all times!
