Travel Review: Wildcat Point, Lake Rosseau, Muskoka, Ontario in Canada

Megan Lawton enjoys a luxury self-catering break at this elegant lakeside property.

By Megan Lawton   |

Nestled between towering pines and ancient granite rock, Wildcat Point offers a quintessential Muskoka escape, blending luxury with the untamed beauty of the Canadian wilderness. Managed by Jayne’s Cottages, this lakeside haven promises an unforgettable retreat for those seeking tranquillity, comfort, and a touch of elegance.

From the moment we arrived, the charming white wood-panelled cottage welcomed us with tasteful flower arrangements, and a festive Halloween-themed pumpkin by the front door. Stepping through the large, glass-panelled door, you are immediately struck by the openness of the space and the beauty that surrounds you.

The grand floor to ceiling windows overlook a 360-degree view of Lake Rosseau and the majestic pine trees that surround it. Natural light floods the downstairs space; a large, open-plan living area with exposed wooden beams overhead, contrasted with soft wooden floors.

With its abundance of natural light, the property blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, with the beauty of the surroundings seeping into every corner of the cottage. On cooler Muskoka mornings, under-floor heating ensures every step is comfortable, while the state-of-the-art kitchen is a chef’s dream, featuring all the modern utensils and appliances you could possibly need. Whether whipping up breakfast or hosting a full dinner, the kitchen is well-equipped, complete with condiments and a thoughtful basket of local Muskoka goodies including tea, local jam, and maple syrup.

For those who prefer dining indoors, the warm, spacious dining room is a showstopper. A large wooden table seats ten comfortably, making it ideal for family feasts or intimate gatherings. The handcrafted wooden maps of the Muskoka lakes on the walls connected us further to the region’s stunning geography, while the state-of-the-art sound system allows listening in all areas, including from rock shaped speakers on the outdoor patio.

Tucked away on the ground floor is the master bedroom. Its soaring floor-to-ceiling windows frame the serene lake below, letting light pour in from sunrise to sunset. A large, impossibly comfortable bed beckons from the centre of the room – a necessity after a long day spent exploring the outdoors.

The room has a walk-in closet and a large, white marbled ensuite bathroom, featuring separate toilet and shower cubicles, dual sinks and a large freestanding bathtub positioned in front of another stunning bay window. From the bedroom, sliding glass doors open directly onto a private terrace, where sun loungers await, offering a quiet spot to sip your morning coffee.

Another four large bedrooms await. Two with ensuite bathrooms, one with a stunning rooftop patio behind sliding doors – another incredible spot for alfresco breakfast and coffee. Downstairs is a haven for kids: a room filled with bunk beds and twin beds sits next to the property’s comfortable and cosy cinema room.

Back upstairs and through more sliding glass doors, the sprawling patio area beckons. It’s complete with wooden chairs, sun loungers, and a dining table; the perfect spot to host a barbecue or dine outside while soaking in breath-taking views of Lake Rosseau. A sloping path leads down to a cosy firepit and then further to the cottage’s private dock, where kayaks and paddleboards are stacked ready for a day on the water. Nothing brought us tranquillity quite like a peaceful morning paddle, or lounging on the deck in the afternoon sun.

In Muskoka, the best way to get around is on the lake, either by boat, paddleboard or kayak. Ahead of staying at Jayne’s cottages, all guests are given the option to choose a boat, which will be moored at the property’s private deck. It’s well worth doing for, as we found, nothing beats a boat trip to explore Muskoka’s four incredible lakes. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon skimming across the water, taking in the many magnificent homes that line the lakes – home to many a famous face.

If staying local is more appealing, most of Jayne’s Cottages come equipped with a selection of paddleboards and kayaks, which guests can freely take out to explore their neck of the lake. If you prefer to stay on land, however, the surrounding trails are ideal for hiking and, as we found, it’s more than likely you’ll stumble across a deer or see an eagle soaring overhead.

A short drive away from the cottage is the town of Rosseau – where we picked up groceries from the general store and bakery, and a little further is the heart of Muskoka – Port Carling – where boutique shopping and luxury restaurants await. As much as the local area offers entertainment, our favourite moments were those spent at the cottage; watching movies in the cinema room, baking pancakes in the kitchen and reading books in the lounge space, all whilst taking in the epic surroundings. To ensure guests don’t need to leave their properties, Jayne’s Cottages also offer private yoga sessions, massages and even Peloton bikes.

In a nutshell

Less than three hours’ drive from Toronto, Jayne’s Cottages offers a truly unforgettable Muskoka experience, where luxury meets the beauty of nature. It’s an ideal retreat for families and friends, offering tranquil mornings paddling on the lake, cosy evenings by the firepit, as well as fine dining restaurants. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this property promises a memorable getaway in a stunning natural setting.
